Lamar University's Pat Knight has Epic Rant

So why does he still have them on the team? Why not kick them off the team?

And did he recruit these guys?

No idea. It does sound like a coaching problem.

The man called it like it is. No problem with what he had to say at all, but I'd give the seniors three more games, then pull their scholarships if they don't have a turn-around from the coach's perspective.

Yeah its his first year. Guess going with the wait til I get my guys here approach. He was brought in for his name. Color me unimpressed.

I agree. I really didn't see it as that 'epic.' He's unhappy with their attitude off the court, in practice and on the court.

I guess it never ceases to amaze me when somebody like Pat Knight gives a very sincere, genuine press conference and the media characterizes it in a negative/kooky way. The alternative is you can just have a coach sounding like Belichick in press conferences.

And no, I was hardly a Bob Knight fan. But, I know when a coach is being genuine and informative when I see it.

Perhaps. Although he has gone thru the coaching ranks like most young coaches....played basketball at IU, long time assistant with successful programs.

You know what you get with him. He's a motion offense guy where the offensive scheme sets up open looks. So if you're a school like Lamar, you hope that coaching style will translate to success despite a lack of talent.

Just to clarify I liked the interview, and he has very valid points. The only thing I don't agree with is directly throwing players under the bus using names, do that in the locker room.

That was an "epic rant" ??

What a bunch of pansies our society has become.

I have coached for a long time.

On my teams, physical mistakes are never questioned, everyone makes physical mistakes.

Mental mistakes are frowned upon, but dealt with in practice.
Make sure you pay attention and know what you are supposed to do.

Lack of effort? You can just leave and find something else to do, you are wasting everyone's time, and somebody's money. (parents, school)

Lamar will win under Knight.

I had a problem with what he did in the 1st 7 seconds of this video.

After that I didn't mind anything he said.

As an alumnist I'm excited to see what Knight will bring to the program.

I remember going to games at McDonald gym back in the early 80's with my dad when we made it to the sweet 16 under Tubbs. The area is full of talent it's just a matter of getting the right person in to coach.

Any coach that refers to the team as "they" and not "we" needs to take a serious look at what his role is within that team. Are you not part of that "they" too coach? Are you not a part of that team?

Kicking your player off the interview and telling him you have no idea what it takes to win? Really? Who's job is it to teach them what it takes to win? Yours!!! So instead of saying "we've tried but they just don't get it" how about saying "we've got to do a better job of coaching." How is a "rant" like this going to help build their confidence and team chemistry moving forward?

Idiotic...

Agreed.

..and this is not an epic rant. This is whining.

Since Knight did this his team is 5-0, their scoring per game went up, shooting percantage went up and turnovers went down.

Turns out he knew what he was talking about.

Or maybe he just overreacted. I'm going with that.

LOL, ... that's convenient!

His team loses two games in a row, and must have sucked pretty bad doing it, ... he challenges them in the media, ... and everything miraculously changes, ... but he had nothing to go with it.

:laugh2:
