It used to be after a few hours it would lose its connection and couldnt be fixed without just shutting it off and waiting til the next day. Now it loses its connection after an hour or so.

It seems that the longer its off in between sessions the longer it will work.

Sounds pretty done, but thoughts?

Have you tried "ipconfig /renew" to get the connection back?

You might update your Wifi drivers too. You also could have a virus or something.

I would definitely try what nyc suggested first.

Another possibility could be an over-heating problem. While I have never heard of a wifi controller over-heating, it is possible that the cpu or other areas of the laptop are over-heating which is causing issues with the wifi controller.

Most laptops have an opening/vent where heat is blown out to reduce core temperatures. It is quite common for dust to get in the vents or heat sinks and reduce the level of heat reduction. I only suggest this because of you saying that it used to work longer and has steadily gotten worse over time which matches the symptoms caused by heating issues which also typically grow progressively worse over time.

The only other issue I can think of is it could be caused by power-saving features that are disabling the wifi controller after a set time.

There is some junk behind the computer so I may try and move that stuff later and see if it was blocking a heat duct or whatever.

It could be the card is dying. How old is the laptop? Do you have another wifi card you could try?

Its pretty old and beat up. It actually needs to be plugged in all the time, and the wire needs to be taped in a certain way other wise itll unplug/shut-off.

Its a wireless connection, I dont know if that is an acceptable answer?

When it comes to computers Im better at finding cat pics and searching for celeb nudies. And also some cat nudes,

If that's what you are looking at you probably do have a virus. :D

Is the wifi built in to the computer (meaning it's not a card you insert in to the computer)?

Is this a ThinkPad? They have a piece (os) of software that takes that Windows config utilities place and you must use that to manage the Wifi. The only reason I use it is because I connect to an Enterprise WiFi router and regular windows doesn't support it's connection. (I have to use it)

If you don't have to use it, uninstall that garbage! Whatever it is that you are using, that is probably what is doing the damage, You need to uninstall or reinstall the latest drivers.

Is this on any wireless connection or only to your home network?

Also, some proprietary drivers come with software that manage wireless connections themselves which interfere with the Windows wireless configuration utility. Try to uninstall any connection management software.

EDIT: Hmm if RPC server is disabled it sounds like it could be connection management software that is doing it.

Go to Start then Run and in the run box type services.msc and hit enter.

Go down until you see Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and right click on that and click Properties. Set it to Automatic in the pulldown list and then click the button to start the service and try to do ipconfig /renew again.

Posts like these are what makes this board great for not just all things Cowboys...but pretty much all things. I love getting people's insight here on things like this.

I made a post about a car repair that started at 650 and ended up really costing me 200 with the part and labor. Even better than that, my friend only wanted a 100. But he didn't say no when I insisted he saved me so much money I would have otherwise spent without him.

It's just good to have people help you through things in tough economic times.
