NFL teams have until 3 p.m. CT today to designate 2010 franchise and transition players.

As far as the Cowboys are concerned, they have 14 free agents and, in an uncapped season, they have an extra transition tag and can designate one franchise player and one transition player or two transition players.

There is only one player worthy of a franchise tag: wide receiver Miles Austin.

However, a source said Thursday morning the team probably won't do it.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is on record saying he wants to keep Austin long-term, saying he's not going anywhere and Stephen Jones, the executive vice president, told The Associated Press the team won't franchise Austin.

If the Cowboys place a franchise tag on him, it would cost the Cowboys $9.5 million.

But why franchise Austin, especially after just one breakout year? Austin reached the Pro Bowl after catching 81 passes for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns. He emerged as a force when Roy Williams struggled as the No. 1 wideout.

If the Cowboys don't franchise Austin, what's next?

The Cowboys can work a long-term deal with Austin, something they want to do, or place a first-and-third round tender on him. If that happens, Austin gets a check for $3.168 million for the 2010 season.

Another NFL team can sign Austin to a contract, which the Cowboys could match. If the Cowboys don't match it, they get two picks.

So if we don't franchise him today is he a free man?

Nope, as said in the post, he will be a restricted FA and we can put a 1st and 3rd on him with rights to match any offer. that's how I understand it.

End of story.

1 season is not worth a 1st and a 3rd... unless you are Roy Williams! Can Jerry give Procter a second round tender again, this year?

This isn't really surprising as they made it clear the other day that they would not be tagging him.
