Richards has spent the entire offseason, including OTA's, minicamp, and training camp playing exclusively at Guard. But with Chuma Edoga going down with a hyper-extended knee last Thursday, the Cowboys threw Richards back out to the Left Tackle position for the game against the Jaguars - with zero practice time.

Result: Played 59 total snaps, gave up 2 pressures, and no sacks.

I know, I know, some want to blame him for a sack when Grier didn't step up in the pocket like he should have. That sack is on Grier. Richards did exactly what he was supposed to do against a speed rush - push the rusher up field. Other times, Grier did step up in the pocket, and delivered the ball. Even PFF did not charge that sack to Richards; they charged it to Grier.

On the Jalen Tolbert TD, when playing against the Jaguars #1 defense, Richards completed a perfect switch with Matt Farniok, who played Left Guard, when the Jaguars tried to stunt, giving Grier enough time to complete the TD pass to Tolbert.

  • 14 matchup against Travon Walker (pick #1 in the 2022 draft): 0 pressures allowed
  • 9 matchups against K'Lavon Chaisson (pick #20 in the 2020 draft): 0 pressures allowed
Along with how other rookie draft picks are playing, such as Smith, Overshown, Scott, Vaughn and Brooks, that is 6 of the 8 draft picks that have shown out in the training camp or the preseason games. Schoonmaker is just now getting healthy, and he's expected to win the TE2 position, which means he'll start about 1/2 the games. That leaves only Fehoko as the draft pick that hasn't popped. And he's only playing behind Parsons, Lawrence, Armstrong, Williams, and Fowler, so maybe expecting him to pop in a group that already last year struck fear into the hearts of offensive coordinators league wide is expecting a bit much.

All in all, this is looking like a very solid draft class. And that doesn't include TE John Stephens, who is making his own case for replacing 2nd year TE Peyton Hendershot as TE3.

Man, hope you're right about him!!!

I was worried about his movement skills, but I was happy to see us getting a powerful dude.

I also like Bass, just not at T.

I'm just glad that we, as a society, are consistently blaming QBs for sacks.

I'm encouraged by the play so far of Richards, Bass and Bostick Jr....wouldn't it be something if all three became the 2nd team backups for Martin, Smith and Farniok. Hoping the Great Waletzko starts showing improvement as well.

Matt Farniok and Josh Ball also played well at the LG and RG spots against the Jaguars. Hoffman and Waletzko struggled mightily.

He did look good against them. I don't have time to watch more football besides our Cowboys, so I don't know much about the 3 we are talking about here. Do you know if Richards is a "Technique" type of blocker? Are Walker and Chaisson speed rushers and not bull rushers? The reason I'm asking is because Asim only did 13 reps at the bench press. That's by far the weakest showing I've even read about from a lineman. Tyron did 31, Tyler did 25, Zach did 29 and Steele did 27. Mark Stepnoski, who was known to be a technique guy, he did 29 reps. The NFL lineman average is about 25.

He will have trouble with bull rushers. He's a backup so I'm not too worried about his strength. But it's a concern if he has to be the starter for some reason. I'm not superstitious but I won't say it. Lol

1 preseason game does not a legitimate gauge of play make.
He has been working at guard and in this game he showed that he can play left tackle. He looks like a keeper. He showed he can hold his own against 1st teamers.

What makes his performance more impressive is that, according to Broaddus, I believe, he had been practicing primarily at G, but when Edoga got hurt, they moved him out to LT at the last moment.
I think we may have found ourselves a Tyler Smith Jr. He also supposedly looked really good at G after they slid him inside in the 2nd half.

I thought he looked the best of the young backups, especially at LG. I think if Tyron goes down, Tyler Smith can move to LT and Richards can move into the LG position and the line will be fine. But, it is only 1 preseason game. I'd like to see him start at LG this week and get some snaps against 1st string DTs.

Didn’t Broaddus say he was the 2nd worst lineman next to Ball in the Jacksonville game?

It’s 1 game in preseason but I’d much rather see him playing good during it than struggling

Did he? That's not what I saw, at least not a LG.

https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/asim-richards-wants-to-be-relied-upon-during-regular-season

Asim talks about the difference between G and T on the OL. He mentions how at G he has to get his hands up quickly. This is Farniok's problem. He can get slow with his hands and that let's the DT get inside to his pads. Once this happens NFL DTs can straighten you up and then it is over. They have all the leverage and you are on skis. Farniok can get away with this at C, but not at G.
In any case, I was watching Richards at LG and I think if necessary he could play that position now, if Tyron gets hurt and Tyler has to move outside.

He was just saying he looked good in his debut against legitimate NFL talent after not practicing the position, not that he's a future HOFer.
Yeah but I think the problem here is they were trying to force him to be a guard and then as soon as they put him back to his natural position as a left tackle he showed that he plays that position better that's not a shock that's a Cowboys fault for making him a flex guard instead of from day one putting him out at tackle and I think that now they got some film on it that's where he's gonna end up being he may end up jumping over Wally and that's encouraging given he's a lower round pick that nobody had expectations for now he could be a diamond in the rough..

He looked good in the game.

I first noticed him at the Senior Bowl 1--on--1s.
