Like the cuts, like the "value" in resigning contracts, hate our depth!

I think the Front Office has done the right things in cutting the overpaid and underachieving players. Loved Barber in his prime, loved Columbo and think he has great attitude, but body that is failing him. Roy was a mistake in retrospect, but decent guy, and he's just cursed. Davis was a pro-bowler for us, but has declined in ability and effort it seems. So those moves were good from both a cost and production standpoint.

The contracts they have given Spears, Free, Kosier, and K Coleman (decent big guy - rotation role player) were reasonable. Don't think they overpaid for any of these guys. Tought to lose Bowen, and even if it works out to a short term deal in Wash, that is a lot of dough.

BUT, I hate our depth and there isn't a ton of impact guys that would significantly upgrade our roster available in free-agency. We cut 4 guys with starter type snaps.

So the team is relying on the return of injured players and better/different creative coaching to improve this year. PLUS the "hoped for" return to form of Spencer, Austin, Rat, Jenkins, Newman.

I think from that standpoint we are in trouble compared to teams in our own division like Eagles, and probably the Giants as well. We lack depth and have a lot of question marks still.

I worry in particular about:

Offense:

OT if Free is hurt or 1st Rounder takes time like he very well could/should (particularly with short off season). I don't like Barron and our other young guys are pretty darn raw.

OG - Holland is ok, Kosier is coming back but has been hurt. Not much behind them with any experience. 4th round pick sounds promising, but again, how ready could he be?

C - Gurode IS hurt, and heavy because he hasn't been able to train much. 1 year older and even wonkier slowly degenerative knee(s). Costa is pretty raw and unproven and only started like 1 game.

OLINE Depth is terrible at the moment, even if we hit on this years draft. I'd like to see them try and get O Kreutz who was cut from the Bears as a depth guy, or if Gurode recovers and had to go to guard for a game or two, Kreutz could take over at centre?

FB:

I hope Chapas emerges, because Gronk wasn't great last year. With Jason Garrett liking a bit more of the traditional running game, FB might be more important and we haven't had an impact one since Moose. I know Phillips at TE might play some HB/FB and I REALLY like him, but this might be an area to address late in camp if a savy vet is available.

WR:

We really could use a dependable vet. If Austin or Dez is hurt, I think we are in trouble at WR.

RB, TE, QB are solid and I don't worry about them.

Defense:

I think Ryan's scheme will be biggest help for everything, but do we have any pocket collapsers or pressure guys at DE at all now. Bowen got a bit of pressure on QB, but we seem to have a pure 4 man run stopper rotation now: Spears, Olshansky, Coleman, Lissemore - none of these are QB pressurers.

NOW, with a slimmer Rat (please don't wear this guy out at training camp, rest him), I think we will use him for the "pressure" guy, BUT, that leaves Josh Brent as only true nose-tackle 3-4 type on team no?

I think we could use one more situational pass rusher for front end, maybe a role player type for 3rd downs. Remember, Spears was taken out for many 3rd down plays. Who fills that role now. OR, if that is Rat's new role, then we could use some depth in terms of a big strong NT type - to back up Brent.

If Rat or Brent go down with injury we are in trouble again.

ILB - we have a lot of injury concerns there. Can Lee (who looks like a smart emerging defensive leader) stay on field. Our 2nd round draft pick is 90%. Brooking is older an already hurt and we rely way too much on him and James who have a lot of miles. One injury away from potentially starting a player whose name 95% of Cowboy fans haven't heard of.

OLB - nice to hear reports that Butler and Williams seem to have the lightbulb coming on. Need Spencer to rebound in a big way. If Butler and Williams are just training camp wonders and can't rotate in, then another pass rushing OLB role player would help, especially if Spencer plays like last year. BUT, I think we are probably OK at this position and I hope they give Butler and Williams a ton of snaps and really push them and rotate them in a lot. These guys NEED to step up.

Secondary - BRUTAL. I just am not sold that Jenkins will fully go back to being the player he was 2 years ago. We had a great pass rush and pressure front line that year, and not sure, no matter how creative Ryan's D is this year, that we have the horses to consistently get pressure. It might be expecting too much.

Scandrick showed improvement last year, but I'd love a solid vet corner added to mix.

Newman is a year older and seemed to make a lot of mistakes last year.

None of our guys seem to turn around and have eye on ball.

Safety is just a mess. Sign Elam already, just because he knows Ryan's system and can help organize the secondary. Nobody else is left. I'd love a Sharper for a year or someone like that, but doesn't seem to be any interest from Front office to go the "old" guy route, and I get it, because you overpay. BUT, I'd rather overpay a Sharper for 1 year or 2, than overpay Sensi for 3-4 years, and you're going to have to. I just don't think Sensi is worth the kind of money he wants, and he really disappointed after his 1st season with us.

This is where I fault the Front Office. We have had safety issues for years now and we have NOT found even one consistent solution there. I am almost certain this is going to be a HUGE achilles heel for us AGAIN this year.

I shudder to think of what we start the season with at safety, and that is even before Kwasi or Church tweak a hamstring or something like that.

I have no idea what special teams will be like, outside our punter and long snapper. Who returns kicks/punts (every year that isn't solved). Our coverage team lost Hurd. Early in camp Buehler doesn't sound any farther along or close to consistent.

Lots of questions and holes in this team. I think we have some excellent talent, and am really excited about Garrett coaching and Ryan's scheme and coaching, but the depth is SCARY.

Been a patient Front Office, but I think we need to sign a few vets if we want to make the playoffs this year. One or two injuries at the wrong spots and we would have gaping holes. Which players would provide an upgrade over the draft picks or journeyman guys we are trying to develop at moment though. Not a ton left out there. Maybe we are waiting for more cuts from teams, but that is scary too.

8-8 is my prediction based on lack of depth. 9-7 if we can avoid significant injuries. Add a couple of savy pieces (harder and harder as each day goes by) maybe 10-6. Coaching/scheme improvement will help, but only so much.

Excellent assessment, I agree with everything.

Can't really argue with any of that. We are going to have to keep our fingers crossed that some of our young, unproven players can step up at least into backup roles. As far as the injury issues goes, you can pretty much say the same thing for almost every team in the league. Not many, if any, teams have the depth any more to be able to absorb numerous injuries at key positions. However, it can be done. Green Bay did it last year. They lost a load of key contributors and won it all. Still, the odds of any team losing a bunch of starters and surviving it are slim.

The secondary will depend on who plays safety. I think Ball's total incompetence had everyone else looking over their shoulders constantly and that also affected their performance.

You guys just aren't being realistic with a lot of the depth concerns. Every team has young players coming in as the depth. Safety is the obvious position to worry about and that's because they haven't signed anyone yet.

Totally agree on the injury thing Star4Ever, but I'm not even talking about a lot of injuries or even significant injuries.

Even compared to last year, Dez went down but we had Roy Williams (like him or not, he caught TD's in red zone and had moments) - we don't have that now.

Bowen at least had some pressure at DE, now we go to a role player in Coleman.

Rat is smaller and one year older/tired. Love him, but he just plain gets worn out.

Brooking and James are 1 year older and tired.

We changed out about 4-5 pieces in our Oline, and Gurode is hurt.

Our 2 starters at safety were dreadful, one isn't re-signed and one is moved back to corner.

Our corners were dreadful overall last year, and Newman is a year older again.

I'm talking about one or two minor injuries and we will probably have either mid round draft picks with little to no experience starting or total no-name players in starting roles at a couple of spots. Those will be EXPLOITED and picked on, just like our safety position has been for years.

Our Oline is younger, but will be pushed by oppossing coaches. They are gonna throw the kitchen sink at it. That means Romo has less time to use his weapons in Austin, Witten, Dez in particular, putting way more pressure on offense to move ball and put up points. If Dez or Austin go down, oppossing teams will double team the on remaining and shorten the field and make us consistently execute to move the ball. Tough to do with a patchwork oline.

I think the Eagles and Giants have far more depth than us. Vikings, Saints, Falcons for sure.

I hear what you are saying, but I think Cowboys are more vulnerable at this point of this season at least, than at any time over last 4 seasons. Still a bit of time to bring in a vet or two, but VERY SCARY, and I'm usually totally a rose-coloured glasses guy.

I think the best teams in the NFC will be 1) Green Bay 2) New Orleans 3) Atlanta 4) Philly. The remaining contenders are toss-ups. Could be us, could be the Giants, Bucs, Bears (don't think so really). Teams like Detroit and St. Louis will be improved. I personally don't think much of Minnesota. No QB, lost their best WR, aging defense. I don't think the Vikings will do much. Let's face, who knows what will happen in the West. I would like Seattle with the moves they've made except for the fact that they do not have a QB. I could see any of the 4 teams in that division willing it, but believe Arizone might be the best of the bunch.

Well said Larry

there seems to be a lot of "what ifs" We play the young guns if something happens to a starter and go with what we got. Drew Bledsoe got hurt and Tom Brady took over.... Drew Bledsoe got hurt Tony Romo took over... Roy Williams got hurt Miles Austin took over....

I agree 100% I don't think we are in dire straits with depth. Yes we have some young guys behind the starters but that doesn't mean they can't be quality players. That is what practice is for. I don't see a need to bring in a WR we lost 1 guy not 2 or 3. We have 2 3rd year pro's and a rookie who all are showing promise. There is nothing here that suggests that we need a VET.

FB is another one I don't see a need to rush and sign a VET we have a 2nd year FB who gained a lot of experience last year and a full off season to train and build his body. We also just spent a draft pick on another FB. and we do run a lot of H-Back stuff so with Phillips returning I think we are good there.

Oline I could see us needing a vet at C/G but who do we cut to make room for them? Do we get rid of a young guy show is showing signs of growth and improvement? for an older linemen who is used for insurance that is going to be replaced in another year? guess what we are back to looking at a young guy again.

D-line I believe we need to add another player. Last year after spears got hurt we had Bown, Hatcher, Rat, Brent, Liss, Igor.. This year we Have Spears, Rat Brent Liss Igor and Cole.. So do really need more depth? I say we need someone is is a stud but there isn't anyone out there that is a STUD and would replace one of these guys.

LB? We are solid here probably the best position on the team. Safety? Yes we need depth here But I am starting to come around to letting the 2nd year guys Play.

CB? I think we have solid depth here as well Mike, Newman Oscan, Ball, Thomas, Mccann These guys have talent they just need better technique and a fire which Rob has brought.

All in all I think everyone needs to look at this. It's not as bad as everyone thinks.

LarryCanadian - a very sober and calm assessment. I too, agree with you.

A couple of additional thoughts:

1. - our schedule is a bit easier this year than last. We were a 6 - 10 team last year. Arguably, we could have been better (fewer vital mistakes) or worse (the last Philly game was against their 2nd/3rd string - and, we barely won). But, this year's schedule will be a little easier.

2. - our coaching staff is vitually brand new and hasn't had the normal opportunity to instill their style, conditioning and vision during the off-season, given the lock out. They might be great (and I think they will be), but it just doesn't seem to be enough time to have us operating 'on all cylinders' this year. It takes some time - it did with Jimmy Johnson, it will with Jason Garrett.

3. - it does appear Jason Garrett understands to need to recruit and retain high quality, high work ethic players that have what it takes to play 'the Cowboy way'. Build through the draft, be cautious through FA - nothing fantasy, just methodical, one day at a time and committed to improving today. He is starting to re-build a lost dynasty. But, it will take time. Rome wasn't built in a day. I have a hard time seeing the Cowboy's exceeding 9-7 this year.

Forget about depth - we are missing bona fide starters at these positions based upon last year's performances. As for LB depth, we are old/fragile in the middle. If Lee can prove to be a weekly contributor, then the situation is manageable. If not, opponents will continue to tear up the middle of the field as the LB's get exhausted.

agreed we need starters at some key positions, yeah our depth sucks but dont tell me all those other teams dont have backup issues , no way do you know off the top off your head what other teams have or dont have.

while the OP makes some valid points there is way to much if this guy gets hurt" scenarios. take away key starters for any team and there season gets ugly . again i undertans the concerns but im far more worried about finding a real starting right guard and a few saftey's then a backup LT or 3rd wr .

The Cowboys will miss Bowen's pass rush, but Coleman is a solid, tough vet, who knows Ryan's system. I also expect Lissemore to contribute as well.

I'm not concerned about this potential problem as others on here might be. Ryan's exotic defenses will help keep Ratliff from wearing down imo, plus I fully expect Josh Brent to emerge as a solid backup to Ratliff.

Which is why the Cowboys have drafted their replacements in the past two drafts in Lee and Carter. Your really over-analzing the inside lb position a bit.

I've counted two changes in the starting o-line so far, which imo, needed to be changed in Colombo and Davis. I can see the Boys signing a vet. guard to push Holland, but I'm very excited about the Cowboys young o-lineman prospects in Smith, Arkin, Young, and Costa.

Imo, this is the Cowboys most glaring weakness. I don't see the Boys signing two starters, but definitely one starter.

I think last year was aberration for Newman and Jenkins. Inconsistant safety play, and poor coaching play were the primary reasons for their bad season, as well as lesser factors(lack of a consistant pass rush from someone other than Ware). Although Newman and Jenkins regressed last year, Scandrick stepped up and had a solid season. Besides I want to give Newman and Jenkins this year a chance for them to redeem themselves, before I would blow it up.

A legitimate concern, but I'm optimistic about Romo's ability to scramble and make plays and JG's playcalling to, hopefully, protect Romo.

I'm not as scared as you about the potential downfall of the Boys, if(big if) the Boys get consistant safety and o-line play.

I am hoping that a real head coach who stresses discipline and focus will improve some of the backups to the point where they will not be a liability if they are needed. However your concerns Larry, are pretty valid.

It's nice to see someone take a deep breath and try to assess thing sanely.

Yes, we have some holes to fill still. But given the BIG picture (including slaary cap, FA contract Value, teams needs now, team needs in 1-2 years, etc) this offseason has not been quite as bad as some think.

I'm still a bit queasy about our safties and certain depth. Hopefully we are not through.

Ogeltree and Manny Johnson. Dude get a grip man if JG didn't feel like Ogeltree or Harris couldn't step up he would've brought in another guy. However it sounds as if Ogletree has been one of the best players at camp. So take a xanax and relax.
