Linebacker could be a sneaky need

-Lve is coming off of a solid season, but few a few games with that neck issue. He is a fa that we hope to resign, depending on his price.
-Barr isn't expected to be resigned, his play was decent, but I think the coaches expected more out of him.
-Clark missed the entire offseason and he was very inconsistent on the field, so much he barely played in the postseason as the Coaches didn't trust him.
-Gifford is also a fa and is more of a special teams player, you would think last year's pick Devin Harper could replace his lost production on special teams.
-Many fans are high on Jabril Cox, but not the coaches. Believe they see him as a nickel LB/S that Kearse currently plays.

What happens if Lve departs and Bobby Wagner signs elsewhere? This need becomes #1 priority.

I'll be surprised if they don't have either LVE or Wagner on the roster (or possibly another free agent).

Wagner would only be a short term solution; therefore, LB would remain a draft need.

Not sure they can count on LVE long term either.

Clark's durability is also a question mark.

LB could easily be BPA at #26.

If we don’t sign LVE it’s a glaring need.

I want no part of trotting out Clark and Cox as the starters…that would be big time regression on defense.

I’d bring LVE back on a 1/2 year deal…he played great last year and knows the defense.

LB is kind of the RB of defense. It isn't as fungible, but they're both low-impact and high-injury positions. It's usually better to place a lot of different low-cost bets at that position rather than putting all your eggs in one basket (vs say OT, where having 4 cheap free agents and day 3 picks is a recipe to get your QB murdered).

I think we've got to pay Vander Esch... he's a true difference maker now. The difference in our run defense with and without him was almost Sean Lee esque. If he's in the fold, then I think we can make up the rest with rookies or another Barr type free agent.

There's nothing sneaky about it, it's a big need.
LVE may or may not be here and not for long either way. At this point in his career I'm not about to throw big time $ at Bobby so a 1 yr rental at best. Barr is most likely gone and wasn't much help anyway. I think Clark will probably take the step forward and be a good LB for us, but will Cox? With Micah transitioning to a primary pass rusher role we don't have much in the cupboard.

Depending on who is still available, I think Sanders is a real option in round 1.

Wouldn't surprise me if they improve the edge and DL and make Micah play a much higher snap at the MIKE position. Dude is a liability in the run game on the edge. I could see him WLB with Wagner coming in.

Wagner would be a great get, but I don’t see it.

That's what needs to happen if we were smart. Sign Wagner or David and have them tell micah to sthu/get off Twitter and be an expert of this defense as a linebacker. Then on 3rd downs he can rush. LVE isn't pushing micah to the limit like a proven winner would. Lb is a need but not from a rookie

Think they figured out late, he is better off the ball against the run

Yeah, LB is a need for sure.

That's why I like Captain Jack.

Stephen already said LVE will be about economics, which likely means he may get a better offer than we can afford. IF he doesn't retire, it's going to be Wagner IMO.

I think it would be wise to double dip. Say re-sign LVE to a contract that the team can get out of in a year or 2 and then draft one in day 2/3

Campbell, Sewell, Tootoo, Herbig etc...

Leaning towards Campbell to start off primarily as a run down defender his rookie year and then hope he progress into a 3 down guy but in the mean time we got Kearse, LVE, Wilson, Cox etc that can play that obvious passing down LB.
