First off, I'm not including Coach Zimmer's son, Adam, who coached with his dad for so many years that it's got to be it's own unique form of heartbreak for dad to get back in the seat under that situation. No doubt, it's been necessary for dad to get away for awhile from the game to re-settle himself.

Second, Wikipedia doesn't provide a few years... DAL 2003-06 and CIN 2008-09... and I'm too lazy to go digging it out of other sources. But this should be good enough to satisfy the intended purpose, ie, familiarize us with who could plausibly be getting a phone call this week to come to work.

Third, the guys in yellow would seem to be potentially asked by their current teams for permission to talk. Shaded gray means the Cowboys have already been turned down, of course. No one who was a DB coach is cited, though on second thought, arguably Jerry Gray (might not be back in ATL) or Jeff Howard (might not be back in LAC) perhaps could be a candidate for either DB position coach or passing game coordinator, whichever Al Harris isn't. Karl Scott and Roy Anderson (might not be back in SEA) might figure into that mix, as well, though neither have the same sustained history with Zimmer.

Wasn’t George Edwards here as the assistant head coach or was that a different Edwards?

I'm thinking Paul Guenther might be a possibility for the DL coach if he's interested.

He worked with Zimmer with the Bengals (2008-13) and the Vikings (2021).

passing game coordinator

It will be interesting to see if this is a position that Zimmer actually wants someone to occupy... as you look at his staffs over the years, they are remarkable for how skinny they are. If he follows convention, there will not be a Joe Whitt replacement.

Also, there's a legit question, I believe, whether he will hold on to Al Harris. When you think about it, if you're the new guy with the rep for not being warm and cuddly, if you have a potential holdover that is so well-liked, it may be smarter on the front end to not hold that guy over after all... so that there's not anyone on the staff that a given player might be inclined to try to cry/complain to when he feels upset about something.

New intel, potentially important.

For most of Marvin Lewis' years in Cincy, the D-Line was widely regarded as a top-tier unit. The DL coach was a guy named Jay Hayes. You'll see him in the list in the OP.

Hayes ended up in Tampa for a couple of seasons, and was unceremoniously let go before their 2016 season ended... some believing him to be the easy scapegoat for larger issues since his group there was bottom tier, though injury-plagued.

Here, tho, is the "new intel, potentially important."

Jay Hayes would catch on with another NFL team in 2018 as their Assistant DL coach... one of, if not "the" last addition to a Mike McCarthy staff in Green Bay.

So, we know there's history there... but we don't know, obviously, whether both Mikes have good impressions from what time they worked with him.

Agreed on Paul. Been posting I believe he will be one of the hires

That doesn't make sense. Al Harris is a good coach. If Zimmer doesn't value a good assistant than he isn't a good defensive coordinator. Zimmer is nothing more than a rethread. There was a reason no one hired him for 3 years. He has much more to prove more than anyone.

1. I neither make the rules of logic, nor do I control the tendencies of human nature.

2. Not every "good assistant" is the right match for just any "good defensive coordinator." Styles vary. Schemes vary. Being different doesn't make either one bad, just not a good match.

3. Enough with the pathetic, hollow "retread" insult. An insult is just that. It's not a legit argument. Make legit arguments... in this case, illuminate Zimmer's failings in that role previously. (And. Good luck with that.)

4. Yes, there's a reason why no one hired him. Was it because he applied for jobs and didn't get them, or because he didn't apply for jobs. I don't have the insight, nor hidden cams and mics, to say. But I can say with some confidence that he needed the time off after his son died from alcohol abuse.

Just don't forget, football coaching hires, from peewee to the pros has always consisted mostly of GOB networking...

I believe that, but then again... go row by row in the listing above, and what is striking is how very few assistants that Zimmer eventually hired when with a different team later on.
