So, on the movie channels, they have been playing The Two Towers over and over, and not the other two movies. And the wife watched it, and really wanted to watch ROTK, so I bought the blu ray extended edition, and we have been watching each movie. Now, I love this series, and I am not a big reader, so I have a question maybe someone can help me with.

The Mines of Moria, are where ALL the Dwarves lived, or was it just a colony?
Since there were no Dwarves in the mines, were they completely wiped out as a race?

No there are other clans of Dwarves, more than just the ones that died in Moria. That didn't wipe them all out.

Any reason why they were not involved in the battle for Helms Deep, or the battle in Gondor?

The Dwarves, by and large, keep to themselves and their treasure. And as indicated by the early interactions between Gimli and Legolas, there is an inherent lack of trust between Dwarves and Elves.

Additionally, while the dwarves weren't all concentrated in Moria during the Third Age, there weren't exactly a ton of thriving colonies. Like the elves, the dwarves were a declining race during the Third Age, and it was clear that Middle Earth was gradually becoming a domain of men.

They obviously were aware of the Ring and the rise of Sauron, as indicated by their sending of Gimli to the Council... however, it seems that most of the dwarves that were left were concentrated into those in the Misty Mountains/Moria (wiped out as was made clear) and those in the Lonely Mountain, which was re-colonized after the events of The Hobbit.

It is mentioned in the LOTR that Dale and the Lonely Mountain were attacked by Sauron during the War of the Rings, which may explain why they didn't engage more actively in the other battles outlined in those books.

That's a good question. If you find your answer I wouldn't mind a PM with details. :D

Dwarves were created after Elves and laid to sleep in the mountains until the Elves were awakened. Durin the oldest dwarf founded the kindred in Tolkien's story but there were 7 dwarf kings including Durin and they spread out to form their own kindred. I seem to remember plans for battle or a battle including the dwarves but I can't remember with certainty. I do know they abandoned men and elves at some point. They were long lived at several hundred years but not immortal as the Elves.

Were the Dwarves not effected by the one ring? I seem to remember that when there were the nine rings it couldn't work on the dwarves. Then again that did not mean that the whole lands around them were not going into chaos or whatever.

3 rings for the elven kings under the sky
7 rings for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone
9 rings for mortal men doomed to die
1 ring for the dark lord on his dark Lord on his dark throne in the land of Mordor where the shadow lies
1 ring to rule them all
1 ring to find them
1 ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
in the land of mordor where the shadow lies

At the council of Elrond, the dwarves say that an emissary from Sauron visited them looking for Bilbo, and threaten them if they don't tell them what they want.

I believe the book briefly mentions the battles in the north during the war, and that no doubt included the dwarves, but my memory is poor so I can't recall exactly.

Dwarves don't play a very large role in most of what I read from Tolkien. There are single dwarves that do great things, such as Gimli and Thorin's company that reclaimed the Lonely Mountain from Smaug.

During the War of the Ring most of the dwarves were at the Lonely Mountain and were fighting a host of Easterlings after the battle at Minas Tirith (the white city, Gondor). Gimli thought there would be dwarves in Moria because Balin went to reclaim it after the Lonely Mountain had been reclaimed but he was killed and Moria remained under orc control.

Dwarves were dwindling and many died in Moria when the Balrog was unearthed or at the Lonely Mountain when Smaug first took control.
