LSU suspends three for Auburn game

Cornerback Tyrann Mathieu and running back Spencer Ware have been suspended for this Saturday's game against Auburn, a school official told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach.

A source told the Associated Press that defensive back Tharold Simon is also suspended.

The LSU student newspaper, The Daily Reveille, first reported Wednesday that according to a source, Mathieu and Ware both failed drug tests and that the suspensions could turn into multiple-game suspensions.

The loss of these players makes Saturday's game with Auburn a little more interesting. Not having to throw against Mathieu will be a big relief for Auburn's Clint Moseley, who is making his first start in place of Barrett Trotter. Mathieu has been LSU's most productive defensive player this season, collecting 42 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, grabbing two interceptions, forcing four fumbles and recovering three and returning two for scores.

But beyond Mathieu's stats, he is the heart and soul of LSU's defense. He absolutely flies around the field, is a ball hawk at the nickel position and has a tremendous knack for finding the ball no matter where it is on the field.

If they tank this game because of this, that increases BSU's chance to play for a title or at least a Rose Bowl.

I am not sure about that. I think Bama was going to beat LSU in a few weeks, so if LSU loses this week it should not matter. I don't think the Rose Bowl is going to pass on a traditional Big 10/Pac 10 match up even if Wisconsin and Stanford both slip up and lose a game as long as they both win their respective conferences. Boise will probably still make a BCS game.

Verrrrry interesting.

If Auburn can somehow pull the upset this week now, then LSU beats Alabama in a couple of weeks... then that opens the door for either Boise State, Wisconsin or Stanford to play the OU/OSU winner. I doubt Stanford will beat Oregon, though.

Bama would beat LSU even at full strength. Just my opinion after watching west VA pass all over LSU's defense.

I agree. LSU is going to get BLOWN UP by Bama, not Auburn. I think LSU handles Auburn pretty easily. It may not be a huge blow out, but they have the QB and WR's to get it done.

LSU's defense is too good to get "blown up" by anybody, especially Alabama who runs the "Three yards and a cloud of Trent Richardson" offense.

That game may very will end something like 6-3.

suspend them for Bama. then it would mean something.

There goes Mathieu's Heisman hopes.

Dude was just an opportunist anyway.

Two things and I'm outta here.

1. Auburn has zero chance of beating LSU.

2. I cannot WAIT to post on this board after the Alabama game is history.
