Round 1, pick No. 24 overall
Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia
Listed at 6-foot-7, 330, Mims has the size and athletic ability teams are looking for as a franchise cornerstone at offensive tackle. He started only six games last season for the Bulldogs, all at right tackle. In Dallas, he’d likely be expected to play left tackle, with Tyler Smith staying at left guard. There’s no reason to think Mims couldn’t handle that spot, even if there are some growing pains early.
This pick came down to three players: Mims, Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson and Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry. Powers-Johnson makes a lot of sense if the Cowboys don’t re-sign unrestricted free agent C Tyler Biadasz. A trio of Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland and McKinstry was also intriguing. But ultimately, this pick was about solidifying an offensive line group that has dropped off from once being elite. Tyron Smith’s heir apparent might be Tyler Smith, but if Mims is available at 24, pair him with Tyler Smith on the left side of that line for the next decade.
Mims is Brugler’s fifth-highest-graded OT in this class. There’s a bit of a dropoff after the top six, who are all ranked among his top 18 players. His No. 7 OT is ranked 38th overall.

Round 2, pick No. 56 overall
Junior Colson, LB, Michigan
Some of the other players considered here included Clemson LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Ohio State LB Tommy Eichenberg, Ohio State DT Michael Hall Jr., Alabama DE Chris Braswell and Texas RB Jonathon Brooks.
Having all of the running backs available was interesting. It’s a position of need for the Cowboys, just like it was in last year’s draft. But having all still available also suggested that there could be some pretty good value at pick 87. Linebacker is arguably Dallas’ biggest need. If there was a standout off-the-ball linebacker prospect like Jack Campbell last year or Quay Walker and Devin Lloyd in 2022, that player would’ve been in consideration at pick 24.
Colson is Brugler’s top-graded linebacker in this class, ranked No. 39 overall. The 6-3, 247-pound Colson was a tackling machine for the Wolverines the last two seasons while Michigan had one of the best defensive units in the country. Of course, drafting a Wolverine in the first two rounds will bring criticism because of the return on investment the Cowboys got from Taco Charlton after he was selected in the first round in 2017, and Mazi Smith and Luke Schoonmaker last season. But the national champion Wolverines had an extremely talented roster last season. They have a record 18 players invited to this year’s combine. Simply writing off a player because of his school would be a mistake.

Trey Benson, RB, Florida State
Dallas could re-sign Tony Pollard in free agency. That will come down to what he’s commanding on the open market. It’s unlikely that the Cowboys will be the highest bidder. Running back could be a significant need. And adding a 6-1, 223-pound back like Benson would appear to be an excellent fit. He’s physical but also has the speed to break big runs. He’s the type of complete back who could immediately step in and carry the No. 1 workload. Dallas needs a spark to what has become a stale running game. Benson and an improved offensive line could be the answer.
Others considered at No. 87: Florida State DT Braden Fiske, Notre Dame RB Audric Estime, Utah DE Jonah Elliss and Penn State CB Kalen King.
In a perfect draft, defensive tackle probably would have been addressed in the first few rounds. But in this mock, that would have meant doing some reaching. And when the Cowboys have reached in the past, the return on investment hasn’t matched what it’s been when they pick the best player available.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made comments at the Senior Bowl about being “all in” this offseason, so maybe defensive tackle or linebacker will be addressed in free agency or via trade. But as the roster currently sits, these three picks would help immediately.
