(CNN) -- Madonna will take center stage at halftime of Super Bowl XLVI, flanked by Cirque du Soleil performers in what traditionally is one of the year's most watched shows.

The NFL announced Sunday night, in a press release, that the Michigan-born singer would headline the halftime show on February 5, 2012, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

She follows other high-profile acts in recent years, including the Black Eyed Peas and Usher during the most recent edition of pro football's championship game at Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

Other past performers including Bruce Springsteen, Prince, The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney. The halftime show has also been the subject of controversy, specifically in 2004 during Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction" while singing alongside Justin Timberlake.

The league calls the show "the most-watched musical event of the year," with more than 162 million people tuning in last year in the United States alone

Has there ever been a halftime show in recent times that anyone has liked?
I'm sure some people liked the Bruce Springsteen one a few years back, but overall it's always pretty wretched. The ancient Beach Boys lip synching. Baggy Kiss and the dusty Who.

With the diversity among the fans, there's probably no way it's going to appease even half of the people. Half time is a great tie to go stuff your face or hit the head.

I enjoyed Phil McCartney's halftime. Other than that I don't think any have been memorable in recent years.

I have enjoyed some of them I like Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Michale Jackson and Prince .

On Jackson I did not enjoy it until the day after the game since I was more focused on how the Cowboys would come out in the 2nd half of the game.

They really need to start avoiding artists who are older than the Superbowl itself.

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's idiotic narcissistic showing for some reason made the people in charge scared stiff of asking someone with a little support from the younger viewers to perform.

Completely irrational and reactionary. Watching JT dry hump the ever loving hell out of Janet for the entire duration of the song is acceptable, tasseled breasts are not.

Can't show a partially obscured breast but you better believe the beer commercials and car commercials will be looped week in and week out.

Oh, and don't forget the self promotion that FOX or ABC like to do regarding their newest hit program that is infinitely more suggestive and raunchy than seeing a partially obscured breast.

The things people take offense with is just mind boggling at times. I'm sure that a good number of the people who were pissed at the exposed boob promptly sent their children to the safe-havens of their bedrooms so they could peruse the internet unsupervised.

I can't remember the last time I intentionally watched the halftime show. I say "intentionally" because it's nearly a full length feature with previews at this point and it's hard to miss seeing some of it.

I wish they'd just show a collection of commercials at halftime. It'd be far more entertaining and would allow for a standard halftime break instead of the long and drawn out circus they currently show.

Plus, I'd bet Fox and the NFL would make A TON more money. I think I saw that a 30 second ad this year would run about 3M dollars. Granted some of it is the cost to produce the thing but lets say each one costs 2M to put on the air.

You could run like 30 Ads.
