Mafia Board game?

Was wondering if anyone had any history/interest in Mafia?

Long story short it’s a game where players are divided into two groups. A known miniority (the Mafia) and an unknown majority (the Town). The Town’s job is to sniff out the Mafia and vote them off. The Mafia’s job is to mislead the Town into voting off each other until they gain majority. The Mafia know who each other are and can work together. The Townies are alone and need to figure out who is who.

Game themes and characters can be anything but there will always be at least Town with roughly 25-33% of the total players being Mafia members. Ex: 12 players - 9 Town/3 Mafia

It’s a game of wit, lying, and logic and can be pretty fun just to shoot the breeze with people you see posting around the boards. There’s a fun social/gamesmanship dynamic and if all else fails it’s fun just to tell your buddies “I told you so!” When the game ends and all characters are revealed. I’ve played on another football forum that has become sort of a mainstay over there and thought I’d give it a shot here. Maybe it’ll become a hit.

Sounds interesting, but I assume everyone involved would have to be available and willing to play frequently, or it would hurt the game for everyone else?

More or less. The game is broken down into two “phases”. The Day phase when everyone is allowed to post, point fingers, vote, etc. Depending on the game that’ll last for a few days with the end coming either when time runs out or someone is voted off by the majority of players (usually half the remaining number of players alive plus one).

At the end of the Day that player is revealed as either Town or Mafia and then game transitions into Night. During the Night the Mafia gets to pick a player to “kill” and if the Town has any powers those players can submit their action as well. A doctor can save someone from dying. A cop gets to pick a player and when the Night ends they’ll be told if the player is innocent or guilty. There’s more than just those two, but those are the most basic examples. Nights usually only last 24-48 hours.

Wow, that really does sound interesting. Not sure you could assemble enough people to play, but good luck!
Will there be spectators, or are only the players allowed to see the game?

Sure, anyone could spectate but only the people playing the game and the person running it could post in the actual game thread.

Spectator chats would be created outside on a website like Quick Topic, as well as the private thread for Mafia to talk in. The rest would be handled through personal messages.
