Dwight always picks up cheap fouls.
Some of his fouls are just so damn dumb.
Forgot who it was, early in the game... (Joel Anthony?) had the ball in one arm, Howard grabs his other arm and tries to wrestle it away.
Just dumb.
He needs to understand he is their most important player. He is what opens up the perimeter shooting; he needs to be on the court. And to do so, he needs to cut the crap fouls. Its one thing if he is picking up one chasing after a ball or hustle plays... coaches will live with that. But he picks up some dumb fouls, be it on the perimeter chasing/bumping a guard or crap like he pulled on Anthony.
I think the problem is he just gets so damn amped up, he is prone to that.
But I like what I saw from him. His footwork looked VASTLY improved from last year. The moves were tighter, more fluid, the footwork was pretty solid, and you can tell that working with Hakeem in the offseason has really helped.
People like to compare Howard to Shaq, but that's based on sheer size/athleticism. His game isn't really that similar to Shaq. Shaq posted up. He'd take his time and just back you down. That's not really Howard's game. Howard is a lot more like Hakeem than Shaq in that Howard uses his athleticism/quickness to make moves; not his sheer power.
I think one of the smartest things Howard's done is turn to Hakeem. He's got a long ways to go to get anywhere near Hakeem's footwork and post moves... but he's already looking much improved.
