All the soda fountains were gone by the time I was a kid– My parents met at one. Some lunch counters left, but the soda fountains had been discontinued.

Anyway, me wife read about someone have an 'egg cream' at a soda fountain in one her novels.

She asked me what is was... I didn't have a clue.

Looked it up and found out it was a soda fountain drink.

Funny how this stuff works...

A week or so later, leafing through the "Wall Street Journal" lo and behold there's an article on of all things... "Egg Cream" drinks.

Had never heard of such a thing in my entire adult life and then had two mentions in the span of a week.

In the WSJ they had a recipe (various recipes on the net also)...

1/4 cup condensed milk
1/4 cup whole milk
3 tablespoons Fox's U-Bet Chocolate Syrup

Place all three ingredients in a chilled 12 ounce Fountain-style glass... mix.

Fill the rest of the glass with plain seltzer water, stirring quickly until frothy.

Serve.

I gotta say, we tried it and it was good!

Any chocolate or vanilla or strawberry syrup would work. Fox's is the original soda fountain syrup and that's why that is usually mentioned with egg cream recipes. It does have a different flavor than Hershey's syrup.

So if you want to make a real soda fountain drink at home.... there ya go!

Saw an episode of Justified, where they spoke briefly about this. I did not do the work to find out what it was, but I did wonder. Might give it a whirl when my diet allows.

I had heard of them, but never seen or had one before. Growing up in Texas, I just assumed it was an east coast thing.

I dunno if it was just an east coast thing or not... but I'm guessing that many places that had a soda fountain probably had this on their "menu".

When I was a kid, there was a drugstore downtown that still had a soda fountain. We didn't go there very often, but I do remember having their root beer float and it was pretty darn good. They probably had egg cremes, but I do remember them having sarsaparilla...lol

Sarsaparilla! LOL!

Haven't heard that term in a while.

Where's the egg?

I've been wanting to go to this place in San Francisco to try some of their drinks. Apparently they have a bunch of old fashion recipes like you posted

So...watered down chocolate milk with bubbles?

That's about it! LOL!

It has more of a 'soda-pop' feel to it than it does chocolate milk.

But really just about any drink can be boiled down to something relatively simple.

It may have had egg in the recipe at some point. Egg white has been used in drinks, traditionally, to help make them froth up. Just a thought.
