Looking back on his high school career, Cibolo Steele running back Malcolm Brown remembers one game above all others: his first varsity start against Hays High in 2007.
"[I remember] how scared and nervous I was, hands shaking and stuff," he says.
By the end of the contest, Hays would be trembling, as Brown plowed through its defense for two scores -- including the overtime game-winner -- in a 35-29 victory. Three years later, he continues to give opponents an uneasy feeling every time he touches the ball.
At 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, Brown has the build of an NFL feature back. His ferocious downhill running flattens many defenders, and his shifty footwork makes him challenging to wrap up. He has a penchant for bouncing to the outside, possessing a deceptively-quick burst for a power runner. Scouts have referred to him as the "complete back."
His statistics speak for themselves: this season he's rushed for 1,700 yards and 18 touchdowns in Steele's 7-2 start, including an eye-popping 357-yard, four-touchdown performance against Tivy High on Sept. 10. Last season, Brown piled up 2,192 yards and 24 scores.
Those gaudy stats have wowed countless college programs, but Brown committed to Texas in August. He considered attending Alabama, Florida State and Notre Dame before settling on the Longhorns, citing the "family feeling" in Austin as his determining factor.
That feeling took on added importance with his military family upbringing. Forced to relocate numerous time growing up, Brown developed extremely close bonds with his parents and siblings. He credits them for counseling him through the recruiting process and urging him to follow in the footsteps of legends like Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson. On the field, his tenacious play stems from his constant desire to impress his older brother, Keith.
"I was always trying to beat him in things when I was younger, and that just made me that much better," he says. "He's a real big part of my life."
Brown solidifies an already strong Texas recruiting class, a fresh start the Longhorns sorely need after a disappointing 2010 season. He's as anxious for his arrival to campus as fans are.
"I know I'm gonna have fun with those guys once we get up there," he says.
