There was this fine-fine mighty fine article about the Cowboys linebacker corps, by a Mr Todd Archer in the DMN
He explained the usual about Ellis: he's a true professional, achiles heel injury, salary demands, his age and his contributions last season

I was surprised to see the vitriol out there agin Ellis
I thought I had been hard on the aging Ellis but these guys are tough:
(from Fan Nation)

Tough to request more of anything coming off of a big injury like a his Achilles. I can understand his thinking, but I've never heard of anybody calling in sick for half a year then asking for a raise when he came back.

I have to disagree, Fungus. Remember Kevin Smith? He was an elite corner for Dallas and had the same injury, but was a shell of himself when he came back, and he was about 5 years younger than Ellis when it happened. Jones is right not throw more money at a 32-year-old player coming off a major injury who is ALREADY UNDER CONTRACT.

*

Good move by the Boys in essentially telling him to shut up and play. He's got absolutely no leverage in the situation. If he chooses to sit-out and try to force a move, Dallas already has his replacement, and he kills his value to other teams who aren't going to give big money to a guy his age coming off that type of injury.

ellis was a good player but we don't really need him anymore so srew him!!!!

Cowboy6 said it perfectly. Let's hope Ellis never tries to become a businessman. He has no understanding of market value.

I think it's all a bit harsh if you ax me

Maybe so! But those are all good and legit points, and it is a harsh bidness, it ain't like Ellis is gonna go hungry if he don't get his contract ext.

Hard to have much sympathy with him.

I have always liked Ellis, supported him throug all the crticizms re Moss etc.... got a little tired of his whining at this stage last year.... but sadly for him, absolutely ZERO leverage. Major injury, age = better perform and prove he's fit!

Having said that, I hope he does - that would be good for everyone.

Yeah true statements but I have always thought he was a true DE. last year he showed how good he transitioned well to LB. Hope to see him show up all the people that doubt him. I say he justs needs to have a very good season then he can talk about a raise.

I like Ellis as a person, he's a good guy. But Ellis has never really fit in this 3-4 scheme, and we've been trying to force him to fit. He doesn't think he fit the scheme, and I don't either.

I agree let the cry baby punk sit if he doesn't like it!

Team leaders do not act like he has and take it to the media constantly.

He is proving to be nothing but a fraud and whining _itch!

An Achilles injury isn't an illness, but... :hammer:

Everybody keeps using Kevin Smith as an example of a player unable to come back from an achilles injury but that was about 10 years ago and the medical profession has made great strides in rehabbing so many football injuries. If anyone knows of a more recent anchilles injury more relevant then Smith, I'd like to hear about it. In meantime I've been hearing Ellis is right on schedule but obviously we won't know anything until TC begins--if that's when both Ellis and the Cowboys are sure he's ready to go? If both agree to bring him slowly along, then we will see a lot more of Anthony Spencer. And I'm tired of hiring the comment that "we don't need him anymore". Just see how quickly everybody shots up if either Spencer or Ware get hurt. I'm sure not betting the mortgage on Burnett & Carpenter to replace either of them & need lot more info before dubbing Junior Glymph as their replacement either. Now if the season progresses and we get great production from Ware, Spencer, Glymph & any others along with Ellis, then it not impossible that we might be able trade him to a team desperate for a pass rusher in return for a first day pick--that would be the ideal situation for both of us.

Well, DalEast I don't think he was being literal

In the figurative sense mostly

I had the same illn ... I mean injury

It was difficult to just walk on it like normal when it was healed

Can't imagine having to play a professional sport with that type of injury, albeit healed

With camp starting in a few days let's see if Ellis has realized going public with his grips isn't a great idea. Shoudl he do his usual airing of the dirty laundry in the media, his fan support (or what little is left of it) should just about bottom out. Could he be the least popular guy on the team?
