Mayock talks O Line CNNSI

an O-linman that's worth a top 10 pick, and lineman don't " rise " as other positions do before the draft. They're either dominant or they aren't, and the dominant ones get that reputation very early in the college season, usually in their junior year. There isn't a coach or scout that can point to any O-lineman that's declared for this draft and say " this guy dominated " at his position. It's one of the easiest position to evaluate when it comes to the draft.

The draft has been crazy the past few years, so anything can happen, but I'd be very surprised, almost shocked, if a lineman goes in the top 10 this particular year. It would certainly be somebody trading up, because the teams picking in the top 10 do not have O-line as their #1 priority ( not even the Cowboys - DB is more pressing ) and it wouldn't make sense anyways, since most of these linemen will be available in the 15-25 range and even later.

Hell, it wouldn't surprised me if Pouncey is the first lineman taken by either the Patriots ( 17 ), Chargers ( 18 ) , or Giants ( 19 ), depending on what they want to do with their own players.

I've read where Nate Solder is rising.

Tyron Smith (junior) is going to go real high, I think. He has a good shot at the top 10 from what I've read. Broaddus brought his name up in a chat as a potential name to watch at number 9. If Jerod Mayo can rise to number 10 as a junior, an OT like Smith can, too.

I've seen Sherrod all year long, if he goes off at the Senior Bowl, he's going to knock on the door of the top 10. He stated that his goal was to go in the top 10.

Smith and Sherrod are players with upside, and that has to be considered, too. Solder is, too. However, his height worries me some. These shorter OLBs and DEs can bend and get under you.

I predict at least one OT will go in the top 10. I say all three of these guys will come off the board fast. There should be a run on these three guys. If one goes in the top 10, the run will start pretty quick.

I think this is likely to happen. Since there are so few "1st round" OTs available there will be a run and likely in the mid teens.

Players rise on pre draft work out all the time. Doesn't matter what position. Scouts or teams fall in love with players. It happens EVERY year.

Tell that to Duane Brown, Gosder Cherilus and Brandon Albert.

The problem with Dallas`s scouting on the line is what worries me . Veldheer went to the Raiders last year in the 3rd round. Most teams had a 3rd or early 4th round grade on him. Dallas had a 5th round grade on him. He is starting this year and has done a good job. The point is that fans don`t have to worry about Dallas reaching on the OL. The problem of poor scouting will let several good prospects go to other teams . For some reason , the scouting department does not put proper value on linemen. A 1 to 2 round lower grade is very common on linemen compared to other teams.

This too worries me.
We've had some very good lineman setting there in front of us in the draft, only to pass on them or trade out the slot.

Hopefully few more sets of eyes and opinions will change things or more importantly, a more accurate decision-maker will have input on our drafting of lineman.

Mayock said that this was one of the weakest senior crops in years. He does not have a first round grade on a senior QB, RB or WR.

I believe Smith stated that he's returning to USC.

Branden Albert was the top rated guard prospect in his draft class, and was a sure fire first rounder. Cherilus was considered a late first. Brown was a late riser, and a bonafide reach by the Texans.

good thing we don't need a LT

Also a good thing that we have plenty of other needs that need to be addressed as well, including a horredous defense .

Take the 2009 draft.

The Cowboys like Max Unger and he's the last player sitting on their board with a great value, and rather than move up a few spots to ensure that they are getting their man they let another team sneak up and take him. They were willing to take that risk for an offensive lineman, but they were not willing to take that risk for Sean Lee or Dez Bryant or any other number of players Jerry has moved up a few spots to get.

So they're sitting there with the 51st pick and Sebastian Vollmer is still on the board. We know that the Cowboys liked Vollmer in the scouting process, so much so that they brought him in for a private workout and a private interview with Jerry himself. However, when push comes to shove they just couldn't pull the trigger on drafting him with the 51st pick, even though in the past they have no qualms with spending a 2nd round picks on things like 2nd blocking tight ends, and they trade out of the pick and take Jason Williams in the 3rd round instead. Vollmer goes to the Patriots 7 picks later and he's been playing near Pro Bowl level at right guard for them ever since.

It's not a matter of finding talent. They saw talent in Unger and Vollmer. It's just that for whatever reason, the Cowboys just really have a hard time either properly valuing where an offensive lineman should go or pulling the trigger on drafting one in the first two rounds.

I don't know why this is, but some reason this has been happening for awhile now. I don't get it.

The common denominator has been Jerry (and I'm not known at all as a JJ basher) but I have to think he is the one mostly vetoing these picks. Jerry can't help going for the bright, shiney objects.

Regardless of who is mainly behind it, this has been very frustrtating over the years--and espcially recently when the need (or pending need) has been so obvious.

And that will happen this year as well. Jerry will state that the offense scored the 6th most points in the NFL and all is well. I think we pick up a RT in FA and draft a couple of OL in the 4th round and lower and focus the draft on defense.
