Mazzi Smith - two-gapping scheme caused a false perception?

I am the first to admit that I thought Mazzi was a late 2nd or 3-rounder and not the DT 1 that would be impactful
or worthy of a round-one selection.

What has come out after the pick is that a lot of Mazzi's perceived slowness or stiffness in attacking is due to
the two-gapping he was asked to do and Dallas brass clearly thinks in a one-gap attacking scheme his potential is
much higher in causing disruption and stopping the run.

That reasoning opens me up to be more hopeful about Mazzi.

Correct. That's why the upshot - and the value in drafting him in the first - is if you ask him to do different things that get more out of his athleticism.

Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. The same was said about Ed Oliver.

Well he’s already said that he’s been strictly told by Dallas that his main objective is stop the run first and foremost. So I don’t think you are going to see a guy flying upfield

I read several teams after us were highly interested in Mazi and KC tried to move to 26 to take Mazi. Hes very
quick for a man his size seen film him chasing down RB's in the backfield plus 34 reps at 225 very darn good

I think it’s clear that the defense is not a two gapping system. It’s a different animal.
