Just watching the draft show with Will McClay on the set. Most of the interview was very general, but one thing I caught and been saying throughout this offseason: we see many Tackle prospects who have the ability to play within the interior.

The team has a history of drafting college tackles and kicking them inside, Collins/Martin are two good examples. Tackles usually are more athletic, have better feet.

The likes of Penning, Tyler Smith, Kinnard could be excellent interior players and have the flexibility to lick outside in a pinch.

Many of the OL that played T in college came in around 6’3” at the combine and seem to be built to play the inside game better (better power player to handle the bigger DT’s).

It's not a bad strategy. I believe Green Bay used to exclusively draft college tackles with under a 7.20 (I think) 3-cone, and had them play guard and center. They wanted an entire OL that had LT feet.

Oh great. Another Connor Williams on the way.

I know you don’t want to hear it, but Connor Williams wasn’t a bad pick. 51 starts of (at worst) league average play from the 50th pick isn't a miss. Isn’t 1 thing, to say you hoped Williams developed further than he did, but he was a decent starter at a relatively cheap price point.

I’m not sure I consider 13 holding penalties‘average’.

The 3 I mentioned won’t have lack of strength issues what so ever. The Georgia tackle is another one

People forget that in 2014 when Zach Martin was tearing it up another OT to OG convert (Joel Bitonio) was right on his heals. 4 time AP (1 1st, 3 2nd) and 4 time Pro Bowler

They have a spotty history. It worked with Martin, but he was a pretty elite player and he was taken 16th.

Williams was a shot in the dark in the second round. Turns out they got zero out of him as a tackle, not even as a swing, ever. He was a project that did not work out.

What McClay is saying here is that position flex is better than just taking the best player.

This is just typical. Getting all hot and bothered by position flex instead of taking the player that is experienced and knows what they are doing.

Penning will go well before our pick. Tyler Smith does not fit the body type profile.

Kinnard could be that type. I don't like the player until at the highest the 3rd round.

We aren't going to get our hands on a good tackle prospect at 24. So the watch begins from the 2nd round on.

Look a little deeper than the names you are talking about.

If his master plan is to insert a rookie tackle convert at LG, we really didn't learn from Williams.

Some are good Tackles, but can become elite Guards. I think our biggest issue with both Connor and Biaz was lack of an anchor and inability to generate much of a push in the run game. Think you put a powerful Tackle inside next to Biaz, it greatly improves that weakness.

To be fair, yes, Connor Williams never became an elite Guard, but he was a solid starter for several years. You look around the league, he is better then most. His issue was his lack of play strength which lead to committing many penalties. The 3 I mentioned are as athletic as Conner, but are physically ready now.

Yeah. His name is La’el Collins.

Why not just slide Collins inside??? And draft a real tackle instead of relying on an undrafted free agent in Steele?

Perhaps the plan is to find Tyron’s replacement and start him inside until that time comes. I mention Flozel Adams trajectory
