Colt McCoy made several big plays in the Browns' 34-14 win over the New England Patriots Sunday afternoon.
With a 16-yard touchdown run at the 5:53 mark of the third quarter, Browns rookie quarterback Colt McCoy extended the team’s lead over the visiting New England Patriots to 17 points.

It turned out to be one of several veteran plays he made in leading the team to a 34-14 win over the New England Patriots at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

“I prepare really hard,” McCoy said after the game. “I’ve got great coaches and great teammates and the defense played lights out the last two weeks. I just try to go into a game and be my best for our team.

“Today, the offensive line played awesome and Peyton (Hillis) ran the ball so well and the defense played well,” he continued. “I think we gave them a little bit to play for early on when we got up (by) ten in the first quarter. I just really had to go out there and execute and I just played my game.”

Before McCoy’s touchdown run, the team was penalized for a delay of game. After the penalty yards were marked off, the team faced a first-and-15 from New England’s 16-yard line. McCoy dropped back in the pocket, felt the pressure coming and decided to run the ball.

As McCoy looked to get to the sideline, Joshua Cribbs threw a block that freed up space for the signal-caller to turn and make a dive for the end zone. After New England challenged the play, the referee agreed with the call on the field and the Browns’ lead ballooned to 17 points.

“There were some running lanes,” McCoy said. “That’s always in the back of my head, especially this week, when they play that certain coverage. I was just trying to make a play with my feet, get a first down and it ended up that the receivers made some great blocks downfield and I got in the end zone.”

“It was a good play,” said Cribbs. “Colt got into the end zone. Success!”

Earlier in that scoring drive, McCoy was flushed from the pocket, rolled right and lofted a 20-yard pass to Brian Robiskie down the right sideline.

“He’s done a nice job with his feet and that adds another dimension to what he can do because it forces different types of rush lanes from the defense and it forces the coverage to hold up longer when you can do that with some success,” said Browns coach Eric Mangini.

On the Browns’ third possession of the game, they were faced with a fourth-and-one from their 36-yard line. Instead of punting the ball away to the Patriots, McCoy executed a sneak behind center Alex Mack and picked up three yards and the first down. He only took the snap after spreading the receivers out wide with a shift.

“Nothing is all on me,” McCoy said. “I thought we executed it really well. We practiced that during the week. When we shift them out like that, you see if the front (defensive line) moves and see who goes out. Really at that point, backed up, it was pretty gutsy, but they moved the front and I had an opening and took it.”

McCoy finished the day going 14-of-19 for 174 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He had a career-best 101.6 quarterback rating. McCoy, 2-1 as a starter, is tied with Tim Couch (1999) and Charlie Frye (2005) for the second-most wins by a Browns rookie quarterback. Only Bernie Kosar in 1985, had more wins as a rookie signal-caller. He led the Browns to four victories in ten starts.

“He’s continuing to earn that trust,” Mangini said. “Trust, we are talking about that all of the time. Trust is one of our core values and in order to have it, you need to be trustworthy and everybody needs to know that they can trust you. Colt has done an excellent job each week showing that he’s able to do a little bit more. As he does that, he’s getting a little bit more and he hasn’t disappointed.

“I like the way that he managed the game,” he added. “We gave him quite a few alerts, which means he had to come out and look at what they’re playing and make decisions at the line of scrimmage. For the most part, he made really good decisions and he managed the team really well. Outside of that, I thought the scramble that he had for a touchdown was an outstanding play. I thought the other scramble that he had on the throw to (Joshua) Cribbs was another real outstanding play. He just hasn’t been phased.”

Looking at the overall numbers really does not tell the tale with Colt, the kid plays within the system but when he needs to step up and make a play he was doing it in the Browns last 2 games against some quality opponents

Hook'em Horns! ;)

I would not go that far but I give Colt credit for playing smart and taking on the roll of leader and showing he can make a difference.
