Nate Moore, MCU VP of Development, made a recent appearance on the Ringer-Verse podcast in which he broke down the creative team’s process and eventual decision not to recast T’Challa in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

“You will not see T’Challa in the MCU 616 universe, we couldn’t do it,” Moore shared. “I will say when Chad passed, it was a real conversation we had with [Ryan] Coogler about what do we do.”

He continued, “And it was a fast conversation. It wasn’t weeks, it was minutes of we have to figure out how to move this franchise on without that character because I think we all feel so much of T’Challa in the MCU on the screen, not in comics, right, is tied to Chadwick’s performance, is what he brought to that role both on and off-screen, I would argue.”

He then shared that even though it is arguably a harder decision narratively, they never considered recasting. “So the challenge for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is telling a story without T’Challa, and I think it’s a challenge we’re up for and obviously we’re in the middle of it, and we’re figuring it out and so far I think what we’re getting is great.”

Moore goes on to explain that the challenge of the movie is to balance entertaining people with “catharsis” as fans return to the universe without Boseman. He concluded, “So as filmmakers and storytellers you have to figure out how people are going to feel going in to your movie and what you want that movie to say about that guy who’s not going to be in that movie.”

I’m glad that they made that decision because I feel that it is the best way to truly honor Chadwick Boseman.

But now as a fan, I wonder how they will try to replace the Black Panther as a character. I have heard rumors that they will try to have Letitia Wright take up the mantle next. I am not a fan of that idea.

They made the right decision in my opinion. Movies and television are often graced with very good or excellent casting but rarely genius casting. Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa is an example of the latter.

There is a risk factor in how the audience will react to seeing a different actor playing such roles. It is a line Hollywood does not prefer crossing. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sigourney Weaver are in their 70's but their core respective decades old T-800 and Ripley roles have not been recast. Hollywood does opt for alternatives though. Harrison Ford is nearly 80 but his Han Solo role was recast with Alden Ehrenreich in an origin movie concept a few years ago.

Similarly, Jim Parsons' Sheldon Cooper character was recast in an origin story spinoff series. However, I am doubtful any remakes of The Big Bang Theory will be returning to television with another actor playing an adult Sheldon anytime soon. And practically everyone knows how Hollywood loves regurgitating old shows lol.

Boseman's appearances in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films were regal. Definitive. Profound. He made T'Challa mystical in nature. That is quite a feat for an actor playing the character's title role in a single movie and supporting roles in three others. Boseman made T'Challa into an iconic Hollywood role. Replacing him in the framework of the ongoing MCU would not be the same as, for example, Brandon Routh being the successor of Christopher Reeve's role as Superman. Or Henry Cavill following up Routh. Or all the other various actors who reprised The Last Son of Krypton character, even on television.

Superman was already a mythical icon. Those actors did not make Superman. With respect to their individual acting skills, Superman "made" them. The exact opposite can be said of Boseman and T'Challa.

Hollywood IS Hollywood though. T'Challa will be recast live on either the big or small screen one day. I just don't think anyone should hold their breath waiting for that to happen. :)

Shuri becoming the Black Panther was already done in the comics years ago.

It is a good decision and it also would have been a good decision if they decided to recast. It is a strong character and keeping T'Challa around with a different actor would have been just fine. Moving on from the character to honor Boseman is also a fine idea.

My issue isn’t with the Shuri character.

All I had to do was google her name to find out what your issue probably is. lol

I'd heard a rumor that they had considered bringing back Michael B Jordan's character somehow to be the new Black Panther. He was sympathetic in many ways after all

Yesh. That’s one of several.

I’d love to see that happen somehow. I loved his character and performance and felt it created a truly deep ‘villain’ that you could disagree with but at the same time see their perspective and better understand their motivations. A refreshing change from so many one not ‘bad guys’.

I really like M’Baku. The head of the mountain tribe. I would have been cool seeing him as the Black Panther.

Him becoming Black Panther is already set up in the storyline if they wanted, since he is allowed to challenge for the crown on challenge day.

but what can ya do.
