After being with my company for almost 10 years, I have decided to move on to a new job. I start the new job Sept. 17th. Their insurance plan does not kick in until you have been employed for 90 days.

I currently pay $67 a month for medical insurance with my current employer. I called HR to inquire about COBRA coverage until the insurance at my new job takes effect. The monthly cost for COBRA is $433! I had no idea it was that expensive.

I am very healthy. I don't take any medications or have any chronic conditions, but I don't feel comfortable going completely without medical insurance for 3 months.

Have any of you bought a short-term medical insurance policy before? I am trying to decide if I want to do that or just pay the $433 a month COBRA.

I just bought cheap health insurance for $100 a month that has a huge deductible ($7500) but I guess could keep me from dying if I got the west nile bird aids.

I wouldn't mind going with something like that. I really only want something to cover me in case of an expensive emergency, like appendicitis, broken arm, auto accident etc. Where did you find your policy?

My son had an emergency appendectomy a few months ago. The cost of the surgery was $28,000. His insurance covered all of it but $1800 (he is covered on his father's insurance plan).

How much is health insurance at your new job? Was your old insurance(at this last job), a PPO or HMO? What is the new one, PPO or HMO?

Insurance at my new job will be slightly more, but I will be getting a pay increase so it doesn't matter.

I think the current insurance is a PPO (BCBS). Not sure what the new one is. The lady in HR said she was currently shopping a new better policy for the company that will be in effect by the time my 90 days is up.

go to ehealthinsurance on line. just type ehealthinsurance in google browser. You can compare quotes and call a rep at ehealthinsurance to ask them to explain anything you dont understand - they dont charge you a penny.

You will be able to see what plan best suits your needs and review costs.
