CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami fired coach Randy Shannon on Saturday night, hours after the Hurricanes finished a 7-5 regular season that began with championship expectations.

Athletic director Kirby Hocutt made the call.

"We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program," Hocutt said in a release. "Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world."

Shannon received a four-year extension just before the start of the 2010 season. He was 28-22 in four seasons at Miami.

The "Former Cowboys LB" in the title is more about trivia than a suggestion we hire him. Good Defensive coach though.

This is a great article about Shannon and The U...

... I highly recommend people read it. Miami is my favorite college team, and I'm upset to see Shannon go. He's done a great job cleaning out the trash that was recruited to the school.

That was a really good article. I think they jump the gun with Shannon. I wish they would have given him at least one more year.

Shannon was a good coach and did a good job cleaning up the culture. It's a shame that they didn't give him some more time to continue changing the culture there.

I agree Cas. You have to give him that. He did do a good job keeping that program clean and lord knows, that is no easy task, down in South Beach.

Considering Alabama and Florida get more recognition for winning championships than schools like Miami (and there are more schools like Miami than the former, believe me) get for producing good men, this isn't a big surprise at all.

Win at all costs indeed.

Mine also, I was rooting for Shannon to succeed.

I liked Shannon too but if they could get a guy like Gruden than they can't turn that down.

He'll get every big prospect he wants.

I read on Twitter ... Pretty sure it was Peter King ... that the Gruden thing is a rumor ... Did they make it official or are you just saying if they got him, it has major benefits?
