Sturm did a film review of Gary today

Adding it here since this is the most recent Gary thread.

It’s part of Sturms substack so it is a subscription but I believe everyone gets an article as a freebie and some here are subscribers

It’s really long with several videos but there’s probably no one in town that knows more about Gary than Sturm.

Here is a small portion. Suffice to say, he’s a big Gary fan and his opinion is giving me pause on some of my criticism.

Dallas has brought in a player who will contribute plenty despite the tepid reaction

I have many thoughts and I will start with saying that is a very good football player. I feel comfortable in this finding because I have watched every snap of his career with great interest. As many of you know, I don’t miss Green Bay games and I can verify that if there is one thing that is false, it is the notion that “Packer fans didn’t like him.”

Breakups are tough on fans (heck, some Cowboys fans now act like Micah wasn’t that great) and people cope in many ways and the dream in Wisconsin was that Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary would continuously meet at the QB in 2025. The truth is that there were a few games where it worked well, but Gary started strong and then Parsons came on and then Micah got hurt, which ended with Gary sputtering down the stretch.

At no point should anyone assume that Rashan Gary is better than Micah Parsons. He is objectively not. But, aside from Myles Garrett, who is? That definitely should not take us off the reality that Gary is a very good player and should really serve the Cowboys well.

Gary would seem to have both feet in the boat with much more motivation to touch every rung in the ladder in our team building operation than Clowney. There. Done and dusted. We will bet on the 28-year-old who has something to prove. I think that makes incredible sense when you are installing an all-new defense around Christian Parker.

Christian Parker was in Green Bay in 2019 and 2020 which were Gary’s first two years in the NFL. He was known then as a very good run stopper and he still is. I know there are horror stories and isolated clips of him fizzling late in the season when Micah was injured and they looked to Gary to take over, but if you look at the body of work, I think it is clear that Gary is fully engaged and very good at stopping the run. Not to steer the thread away from Gary, but if he does do a good/very good job at stuffing the run, and helps force the opposition to become more one-dimensional (passing) then that helps the back end of the Defense as well (as long as that unit is competent). I can handle that, as we all know the previous version of our Defense was completely unsatisfactory, both in run and pass Defense.

Expectations for Gary need to be measured. He is a very solid player and helps the Cowboys defense. They can always use more good players. But, expecting him to be "the guy" is not prudent.

Take it up with the Rams. They seem to think Garrett can help them.

I swear, the Seattle super bowl has set our understanding of defensive football back to the days when the single wing was the biggest offensive threat in history.

Who needs talented pass rushers? Just throw out seven random JAGs and win a Super Bowl. Jerry and Stephen planted that seed the day of the Parsons trade when they tried to sell a platoon approach plus Eberflus schemes as a genius plan to actually *improve *our pass rush.

And fans, angry about Taco Bell and podcasts, with everlasting loyalty to Jerry, lit their torches.

By the way

Terrence Steele had the same cap hit as Garrett last year and twice the hit of Parsons

And … the Seahawks had two linemen making more than parsons and a third just under his number. All three of those counted more than any of our d-line. They aren’t cheaping out.

We have no choice. We had "a guy" and traded him away at the worst possible timing. Then we tried to get another "guy" and didn't want to part with the draft capital necessary. So now we pivot to the Seahawks model ...... by default, not because we'd planned it all along. So sure, ride the horse you switched to but didn't necessarily plan to get on.

Yeah. There’s a huge difference between, ‘writing that is competent enough to be understood’, and, ‘writing worth paying for’ - that’s literally what’s meant to separate the professionals from others.

The Eagles bolster the edge every year practically with the Reddicks Phillips types through trade and it helps get you through the year with respectable edge play . This is what the Cowboys FO has done by going out and getting Gary, I give them credit for adding him

I’m fine with this edge room….but, like really any other position of strength, they have to stay healthy….and one of them needs to figure out how to be not stupid.

At full strength this is a nice mix, and I’d for certain take the guys in the middle with this edge group instead of having just Micah outside.
