I don't know about you, but I'm BUMMED that Mad Magazine has quit publishing. I grew up laughing at their crazy stuff. Don Martin, Al Jaffe, the Mad fold-in. Hilarious stuff. I used to have a subscription. I remember the days of waiting in anticipation for my funny magazine to show up in the mail.
I did that in Germany too. When I lived there, I subscribed to the German-language version of Mad, and it really helped me to learn German! When stuff is funny, it helps a lot to remember new vocabulary, way more than if you try to memorize it by rote from some boring flash card.
Mad may be gone, but France has a wacky magazine a lot like it named Fluide Glacial. It's full of all kinds of crazy satire a lot like Mad did. I picked up a copy in Switzerland when I visited in 2017. Just like the German-language Mad did, that magazine helped me to learn some new words, this time French ones.
So I've considered subscribing. I looked it up online, and it is possible to have a subscription outside of France and have the issues mailed across the pond. However, it costs €117.00. Ouch. I had hoped that a strong dollar might help out a bit. I thought that a dollar was worth about €1.20, but turns out it's the opposite. It will cost me $1.20 for one Euro. Ouch. This nice euro to dollar calculator (https://markets.businessinsider.com/currency-converter/euro_united-states-dollar) brings that to $140 for a year / 12 issues. Kinda steep. I'll be contemplating whether or not that's worth it to me. There's plenty of French-language content online for free. I just miss having a wacky magazine show up each month.
Does anyone know about buying online in Euros? Is that 140 bucks the final amount I would end up paying or do I get to look forward to a bank slapping on a whopping conversion fee of $25 or something like that? A hundred-forty bucks is already steep for a magazine subscription. Maybe they have an online deal where I could just buy a few back issues.
If anyone knows what happens when you buy online in Euros, let me know.
