Mike Pereira takes a job with FOX

For years, Mike Pereira has scrutinized the work of the NFL's game officials from inside the walls of the league office. Now, he'll be firing arrows from the bushes on the other side of the moat.

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reports that FOX Sports has hired Pereira to serve as a "multi-platform rules analyst."

He'll have a command center in L.A. similar to the one he used at 280 Park Avenue, where questionable calls were reviewed, dissected, and discussed once per week on NFL Total Access. Pereira will appear on FOX television and radio, and he'll conduct a live chat with fans during games, which will include analysis of controversial calls.

"If I was given my choice of anything I could do after retiring from the league, this is pretty much it," Pereira said.

Actually, his first choice was to become an assistant coach in charge of penalty prevention. And we have a feeling that the league office eventually will wish that one of the 32 franchises had taken Pereira up on his offer.

For the fans, it's great news. We all will have access to Pereira's experience and knowledge of the rules. Though we admired his candor when talking about blown calls, we still think that from time to time he pulled a few punches given the position he occupied. With FOX, we're hoping that he'll tell it like it is, without varnish or restraint.
