The Phillies are said to be huge sellers.

The Cubs have traded Reed Johnson and Paul Maholm to the Braves, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweets. Four teams made offers for Johnson today, including the Pirates and Tigers, according to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com.

The Phillies are about to promote a whole lot of minor leaguers. They are quite a bit over the luxury tax after signing Hamels. Not to mention they have several big name free agents and Hunter Pence is eligible for arbitration and it's a no-brainer that he is going to get a BIG raise.

Not sure why the Phillies signed Hamels anyway...if they are in firesale mode to rebuild do it all the way...when rebuilding you don't tie up that kind of money in one player...you do that when you're that one player away from winning it

You don't let an ace left handing starting pitcher still in his 20's leave in FA if you can help it. There are other ways to cut salary.

One frontline pitcher surrounded by a team of minor leaguers does you no good...you capilalize on that by finding a trade partner that has a stacked minor league system and you do your best to cherry pick it and hope they want your ace enough bite on it...the Rangers made a decent haul just by trading Tex when they did.

We won't have one pitcher and a bunch of minor leaguers. That's nonsense. The Phillies made the right decision on Hamels. Now they need to make some other moves to free up salary.

They don't need a total overhaul. If they would have just stayed healthy they'd still be in contention right now.

The next time the Rangers win something I'll start paying attention to their model.

Pence, 29, is hitting .271/.336/.447 in 440 plate appearances for the Phillies this year. He's under team control for 2013, though his salary could exceed $14MM.

I'm pissed the Giants got Pence, if it was anyone in Philly that I wanted it was him. That being said if the Dodgers can make the Dempster trade happen by the deadline we have gotten significantly better. Ramirez/Choate/League/Victorino/Dempster

Dude. If Hamels didn't make it clear that if traded, he would resign with Philly in FA, I would have begged the Rangers to trade for him and then resign him for big bucks. Hamels is a jewel you WANT in your rotation.

As a braves fan, there is nothing better than watching Cole Hamels sign a mega deal and then beating up on him in his first start.

I like the trade the braves made, but I wish we didn't give up Arodys Vizcaino for it.

I think they wanted to get rid of Hamels before he got hyped up and then they decided that they wanted him.

Spending all that money on Cliff Lee was a mistake and you know they regret it.

We have nothing to build a team around anymore except for Hamels. Utley and Howard are both old and declining.. Rollins is just puttering along, useless except for defense, and we just traded our two best and relatively young hitters. Now we have a crappy old team and a depleted farm system.. to go along with 3 very good starting pitchers, two of which only have a few years left in the tank.

Begs the question, for me.. how exactly did RAJ take the keys to a high end Benz and turn it into a clunker in only a couple years time?

Change needs to start at the top.. and he needs to go.
