Also was your previous monitor that same size? If this one is a good deal larger it just might take some time for your eyes to adjust to it.

No, it was a bulky, 17" VGA monitor. The lighting in my room hasn't changed, so it must be a monitor settings issue. They say your monitor should be an arm's length away from your eyes, but the chair and desk I use make this impossible. As a result, it's more like an arm-and-a-half away.

It's common for people to watch their TV's and stuff of brightnesses that are way over the top.
We're led to believe it's the norm, but really you shouldn't need full brightness.

I just got a new computer desk. Much smaller width or depth wise. I am thinking of switching from my old VGA monitor to a flat screen one so I have more room on the desk.
I prefer my keyboard on top of the desk and loath the pull out trays. But currently I don't have much choice as there is not enough room on the top for my keyboard.
