EAST HAMPTON - A 27-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment after two toddlers were found wandering around town in just their diapers, police said.

Police found two boys, ages 2 and 3, close to Flatbrook Road in a wooded area near a stream. Police said the boys were outside for about an hour.

When their mohter, Julie Root, showed up to the scene, she appeared to be under the influence of prescription pain medications, police said.

She told police she dozed off after returning home from her third-shift job around 7:30 a.m. and began searching for the boys as soon as she realized they were missing.

The boys' father was also inside and sleeping at the time of the incident, police said. The boys were taken to area hospital to be checked out and then released to their father, according to WTNH news.

Julie Root was released on a $10,000 bond and is due in court April 20.

you might have missed this point

I do it as well. but in this case, I think the police went the only way they could have. THey cant arrest the father for being a bad parent, but by law, they have to put children back into a bad situation.

I would rather see them with at least one of their parents vs the cops immediately pulling the children and putting them in those state run programs.

i understand, i also understand working the third shift, and how exhausted you are after, maybe she was on pain killers, but maybe she had a prescription? or maybe she was tired from the third shift and appeared to be on drugs?

exactly right. More questions than answers and as a nation we "freak out" when it comes to kids.
