Been jamming with a couple of my friends for about 10 months now...just covers mostly...ive been playing guitar since about 2002 so its about time finally haha..they all started there instruments last october...so w keep things fairly simple, have about 20 songs were playing...but were playing a block party, and were going to be playing to alot of people in our age group (which is about 19-23) and we had a 10 song set planned..

Lollipop- lil wayne (framing hanley version)
Joker and the Thief- Wolfmother
For whom the bell tolls- Metallica
Cant Stop- RHCP
Are you gonna be my girl- Jet
Corduroy- Pearl Jam
Boys of Summer- Ataries version
Runaround Sue- We wrote it to be kinda heavy (in the kinda volbeat vein)
Harvester of Sorrow- Metallica

Now the problem is for weeks we have had to decided on a 10th song...considering the crowd and friends we ll be playing to, i pitched popular relavent songs like Kings of leon, Katy perry, Gaga ect...and i get scoffed at..not that i love those songs...but i have a feeling 20 year old girls dont wanna hear harvester of sorrow(which is only there cause we consider it our tightest song) So i told the rest of them to decide on a song...they didnt...and they still scoff at my idea for a poular song...am i in the wrong here?

First off, congratulations on your first gig! Here's a little tip from Zakk Wylde, "act like you're in rehersal, just relax and play. If you're thinkin' you're stinkin'."

I think you definitely have to play to your audience if you're only playing cover tunes. But Katy Perry? Seriously? No. You should play something that everybody knows and will sing and dance to, and still retain your coolness. How about "Bobby McGee" or "Brown Eyed Girl" or "Girl, You Really Got Me Now?" Think singalong song. Just a suggestion.

You could do a pop song or two that is current...just put your own spin on it to make it faster or heavier.

How about a metal version of "YMCA"...

If you didn't wanna stick with Harvester of Sorrow, Metallica has plenty of teeny bopper songs, pretty much anything after And Justice For All. (though I do like the song No Leaf Clover)

You've got to give the people what they want. Being old and in the way I wouldn't know what that is for your age group though.
