My dog Jack/Pet Thread

We spent the last 36 hours with our dog Jack(my original namesake on here) in the vet ICU. He went in for heart failure but was also diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and anemia while there. He was collapsing every time after taking a few steps to potty for the past few days.

He was my wife’s baby and I mean absolute baby and her chosen one as a pet. He was a little 8lb chihuahua with a potbelly and great personality.

Well, we had to put him down, couldn’t keep his O2 past 75 outside the oxygen cubicle. He gave us the look in his eyes as he was done fighting and tired. He fought this fight for four years…..two years longer than expected. We spent tens of thousands trying everything possible to extend his life but to no avail today. He had a great run though and his 14th birthday will be this Saturday.

I didn’t think that I would be affected this much but it is rough, he truly was a one of a kind and my little buddy(as long as momma wasn’t around).

I can understand completely what you are going through, not a worse feeling in the world. Thoughts and prayers to you during this difficult time. Am positive you and yours gave Jack one heckuva life.

I'm sorry for your loss. It's never easy even when you know "it is time." Each and every one of them is unique and irreplaceable. The joy they bring us is something to cherish and remember. Hang in there, man.

I had to get surgery for my shepherd when he was 10, but that was only about $2000. As much as I loved him, I couldn't spend tens of thousands. I applaud your willingness to spend so much on him, and I sympathize with you for your ultimate loss.

We are a "BiG" animal family here. 5 cats,2dogs,2 Fish tanks,17 hens,2 goats and a "Jack arse named "Billy". The hurt you feel will slightly fad in time but, the special ones have a hold on you.

If I could give you any advice, its this. Spend time as you need it but as loving as you and your wife sounds, give that joy back to a new life.

Sounds like it will win the lottery.

Sorry for your loss. Been there a few times. It's hard to imagine loving something so much as a dog......but we sure do. They are special creatures.

We don’t regret trying all we could though and gladly do it again no matter how stressful it was.

I know what you are going through. So many of us have been there before. I will never forget the way our little Chihuahua Betty looked at me when I drove her to the vet for the last time. Poor little thing. She was rescued from a puppy mill and had an awful life. By the time we got her she was already showing signs of kidney disease. We did what we could for her but it was all too much for her. I just hope that in the few years we had her we made her happy. I cannot believe the impression she made on me in such a short time. If I knew there was a heaven and our dogs would be there waiting for us, I would be in church every day to make sure I got in. What a joyful occasion it would be to see them again, especially Betty.

And it hurts really bad. Jack could not have been more blessed to be a part of your family.

My shepherd had an autoimmune disease, where he'd develop metatarsal fistulae on his back legs. My vet wanted to put him in Prednisone for the rest of his life. After he went down a partial list of side effects, I decided the meds would be worse than the disease, so I refused. He recommended a homeopathic specialist, who gave me an eye drops sized bottle of topical steroids and told me to put one drop on each of the sores, a couple of times a day (IIRC) until they went away.

They went away in about a week, and stayed away for anywhere between six months and three years. The steroids she gave me? $8 for a bottle, and I think I only used three bottles his whole life.

That sucks. My dogs are my buddies. Never had any until late in life and not ready for the inevitable earlier dog years death. They are like kids for us. I would $@#% someone up the same as I would if they hurt my wife or children. Sounds silly, but same bond.

Doesn't sound silly to me. My dog was like a son to me, a grandson to my mother, and cousin to my nieces and nephews...but better behaved.
