Obviously, Jerry is the ultimate factor for when it comes to who is coaching the Cowboys. I'm this thread, I will explore my ideas for a new coaching staff for the Cowboys. Obviously, I think the Head Coach should pick his staff, but we also know how things work here. So, I will try to present what I think is my ideal coaching staff.
Firstly, I think the head coach should be a defencive coach. When your quarterback is a young QB, you need an offensive coach who can help develop your QB. However, Dak Prescott is going to be the QB for about 3 more seasons at a minimum. He is a veteran QB with a lot of experience. I think the coaches that I would want at head coach would be primarily defencive minded. Unfortunately, Vrabel was hired by the Patriots, and I highly doubt we'd have a shot at Belichick even if he wasn't at North Carolina. I think the coaching staff should be a defencive-minded HC, especially one would focus on implementing a physical football mindset.
So, to me, for HC, I want either Aaron Glenn or Brian Flores. I think both are big on physicality. I think Flores is less likely. So, I'd say I would ideally like Aaron Glenn at Head Coach. Firstly, the Joneses like coaches that they know and have prior experience with, and Aaron Glenn used to play here. He is a Parcells disciple as he played with Parcells. I think it's important to have a Parcells-type coach because that means physicality and no nonsense. I think Glenn would be a great choice at HC.
I think for OC, I would like Anthony Lynn (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Lynn), who is the running game coordinator and running backs coach for the Washington Commanders. He was here when Glenn was playing here in 2005-2006. Additionally, he was the OC for the 2021 Detroit Lions during Glenn's first year as Lions DC. So, they have history and both share a branch on the Parcells tree. I think Lynn would be someone who helps Dak because his focus would be on producing an effective run game. When Dak is at his best, he likes to have an effective run game to use the playaction. In fact, granted the link is from 2018, but https://www.pff.com/news/fantasy-football-metrics-that-matter-quarterbacks-on-play-action shows that Dak Prescott had an average QBR of 97.0 without the playaction and 122.0 with the play action with a minimum of 850 passing attempts. I am not able to find his most recent breakdown for non playaction vs playaction. However, https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-qbs-including-dak-prescott-134654684.html shows that Dak Prescott had an average QBR of 104.2 in 2024. So, given that Dak prefers the playaction pass and knowing where his receivers would be (which was something that Parcells liked from his QBs where they had to know presnap what to do), it makes sense to have an OC that gels well with Glenn, can instil a physical run game, and can play to Dak's strengths. To me, Anthony Lynn would play to Dak's strength. I think with Lynn at OC, we would be much better at running the ball, which would set Dak up to be able to do what he does best and play to his strengths.
I think for DC, Zimmer would be a great choice to remain, especially since the team including Parsons seems to like him. Plus, he has history with Glenn and Parcells too.
For special teams, I would like Rich Bisacchia, but I don't think we can hire laterally since he's the Packers Special Teams coordinator. However, perhaps Chris Gould, assistant special teams coordinator for the Chargers. I think he'd be a good fit for Aubrey.
Finally, I do think having Witten in as a TE coach would be good. I think he's a tough coach who would is also a contemporary of Glenn, Lynn, and Zimmer. I think, since he wants perfection, he would really be good for Ferguson and our other TEs.
So, my ideal coaching staff, given the Jerry variable, would be Glenn at HC, Lynn at OC, Zimmer at DC, Gould at ST, and Witten at TE coach. Most of them are Parcells guys, and I think we could have a return of a Parcells-tough team.
