I won’t call it a “fluke” because that doesn’t give the Skins any credit. But, I’d call it an “aberration” or an “anomaly” when you look at the statistics in just about every department and how Dallas beat them in every facet of the game.
Anybody who thinks the Skins are going to the playoffs with Brunnell or that they are going to have a better record at the end of the year than Dallas (provided we stay healthy) is huffing industrial solvents.
I’m sure ESPN will tout Brunnell as “being back!” and Joe Gibbs as a “genius!” and how Brunnell played a great game. In reality, Brunnell was god awful. And one thing nobody points out, on that 3rd and 27 play, the refs missed a hold as they triple teamed Glover and two of the Washington O-Linemen tackled him.
Where this hurts Dallas is the Giants are looking good and I don’t see anybody taking the division away from the Eagles. So now they have lost they should have won and it could come back to haunt them.
- I don’t know, I didn’t think that was really a holding on Flozell. Put it this way, I saw the Skins get away with it. I saw tons of O-Linemen get away with it all weekend long.
- I liked the playcalling. Mainly because the Skins have a great defense and they set up the playcalling that moved the ball, protected Bledsoe, and got the Skins out of their blitz.
Where it was bad was not going for it on 3rd and 15 inside the red zone. I can see the logic as the chances of making the first down are about 5-10%, but when you’re in the red zone you have your best opportunity to score a TD and you have to give it a shot.
- I watched the first Moss TD and I think the blame has to go on Roy. The coverage by Glenn wasn’t very good and I’m not sure if the staff instructed Roy to not worry about the deep ball. But, the guy underneath was covered by Davis and the LB (I think Nguyen) and the only play available was the deep ball.
- The Nose Guard play was spectacular last night. They dominated all night long.
- It seems to me that Parcells and Zimmer almost have a quota on how many times they blitz. The blitz works well against the Skins and coincidentally, they laid off on Brunnell on those two TD passes.
- I’m not worried about this loss since I don’t see a lot of weaknesses on this team. Maybe we don’t have the greatest deep ball passing game and maybe we don’t protect against the deep bomb well and perhaps our special teams unit is subpar. But, so far we look like a real strong team.
- Brunnell without those two TD passes 18 for 32, 182 yards, 5.7 yards per attempt, 59.1 QB rating, 5 sacks.
- One silver lining that nobody will mention. On the Skins last possession they wanted to run the ball and get a first down. With 3rd and 3 they ran the ball and got stuffed. Even though it didn’t matter in the end, I swear for the last 7 years the opposing team would’ve gotten that first down about 90% of the time.
- Vince Lombardi once said that football really comes down to blocking and tackling. It’s so amazing how true that statement is and it’s something that people never mention when it comes the Patriots over the years. They are one of the best blocking teams in the league and are the best tackling team in the league.
When it comes to the Skins defense, people will talk about speed, their blitzing, and their personnel. However, they allow for receivers to get open, they miss their occasional assignments and they aren’t great at bring down the QB.
But, what they do so well is tackle. They don’t allow for you to break tackles and when they hit you, they hit you hard. Because of that they have a great defense.
