My nephew, Mike, completed his truck driving school and has started work as a truck driver. At first I was a little worried because he was a reckless teenager, but now at 21 he's a good truck driver. I rode with him and he pays attention to safety and does a great job. It seems only yesterday he was just a little kid. Now at age 21 you can trust him to drive goods across the country. Proud of him.

He owns his own truck already?

I anticipate commercial transportation is going to start on a trek of significant growth. Good timing and good luck to your Nephew!

My wife is a truck driver ...

Do not know what it’s like in the states, but here in Canada, I think minimum wage pays better.

The sad part is we live in a large manufacturing area and the unskilled auto workers make far more than she does...

Here in Canada there is a shortage of truckers, but they do not increase the pay to attract younger drivers to the field...the trucking company just works them 12-13 hour days...until the majority of drivers start saying no to longer working hours, they’ll continue to be under paid.

The thing is she doesn’t see it ... she works 13 hour days four 700 take home... and that’s 6 days ...

About 9 an hour, minimum wage in Ontario is 14 an hour...

She needs a new job. 78 hours is 18 hours more than we can legally drive in a week, but if I did, I'd gross over $2000.

Maybe Runwild can teach him how to get through 13 gears all while posting on the cowboyszone site and petting his hound Fred.

Yea I've been looking at possibly doing that. There are tons of jobs driving. I just don't think I could go that long without a Jack and Coke. Good luck to the nephew!

I’m not a 100 percent sure how the hours are calculated, it’s usually a 13 hour day, I doubt all of that is driving...but no matter how you slice it the pay sucks.

We're only allowed 14 hours on duty per day, 10 of which can be driving, and we can't drive more than 8 straight hours without taking a half hour off duty break. There are 2 different ways a driver can work his scheduled hours in a week. The way our company does it, we can only work a total of 60 hours in a week, with at least 36 hours off duty, then it restarts at 0 hours.

I’m not totally sure how it works in Canada...but I do know for the amount of hours she puts in she’d be better of at a McJob...minimum wage is 14/hour, 15/hour in 2019...currently she makes 19/hour, for what, all that stress and responsibility...and I believe her job is why we are living apart, she just won’t admit it. That 19/hour is only if your driving local, very rare, then it reverts to mileage. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me.

Yeah, that sounds pretty bad. I don't know what the cost of living is there, but from what you're saying, I don't know how she can afford to live on her own.

She can’t...she is couch surfing at a friends...we used to live in one of the least expensive areas of Ontario...that’s not the case anymore...for any decent apartment, rent starts at 1000/month. Forget buying now, you need a decent income, houses have shot up in price in recent years.

She has an economic viable place to live...our total monthly bills including mortgage is less than 1000/month...but as of now she is choosing no to live with me...

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope things work out for you!
