Navy SEALs Rescue Two Aid Workers in Somalia in Daring Raid

A U.S. special operations team of Navy SEALs rescued two aid workers in Somalia Tuesday night, including a U.S. woman who had been held hostage for three months by Somali kidnappers and suffered from a life-threatening medical condition.

Jessica Buchanan, 32, of Bedford, Va., and Poul Hagen Thisted, 60, of Denmark, were abducted Oct. 25 by a band of Somalis while on their way to the airport in Galcayo, located in central Somalia. Both were working for the Danish Refugee Council's Danish Demining Group, and had just finished a training course for local Somali citizens when they were abducted.

The rescue mission began around 2 a.m. local time as team of Navy SEALs parachuted into the area near the desert encampment where the two aid workers were being held, a U.S. official said. U.S. Africa Command said in a statement that the raid took place in the vicinity of Gadaado, Somalia.

As they approached the camp, the official said, there was a firefight and that there were no U.S. casualties. U.S. Africa Command said that the nine Somali captors were all killed in the firefight.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says the Navy SEAL team that rescued two hostages in Somalia was the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden.

SEAL Team Six parachuted into Somalia under cover of darkness Wednesday and rescued an American woman and a Danish man from an outdoor camp where they were being held by Somali pirates, the official said.

Honestly I have little sympathy for anyone that voluntarily goes to a place like that. What I would hate is for our good people to die to rescue those stupid enough to go to places like that.

I agree. I am not a fan of Americans putting themselves at risk in areas like that. I understand you want to go help the children and the villagers etc, but all you are is a bullseye screaming for yourself to be taken hostage or murdered.


A statistic is all you end up being. Someplace I would never allow myself to be.

According to this article, that's not the case....

No member of the Bin Laden raid team was among the dead, said a Pentagon official briefed on the casualties who was not authorized to speak publicly while families still were being notified.

I sure wouldn't go anywhere near there, and I don't think we ever should have been there.

Though I have suspected there might be moves toward some raids into the area. Of course, if the missions don't involve rescues or the like, few will probably ever hear about it.

It's not like the Somali government is going to complain, either.
