NBC Reportedly Passes on 'Wonder Woman' Pilot

By Tara Ariano, The Set | Friday, May 13, 2011, 9:36 AM

This spring, no pilot was more buzzy, controversial, or intensely scrutinized than "Wonder Woman." But evidently, buzz is not enough to overcome the stink of a misbegotten failure: This week, NBC declined to pick up the show.

The news comes as the networks prepare for their upfront presentations (where they unveil their fall schedules for advertisers). "Wonder Woman" would have seemed to be a sure thing: It was produced by David E. Kelley, whose TV successes with the network date back to "L.A. Law," and starred geek-bait stars like Cary "The Princess Bride" Elwes and Elizabeth "Austin Powers" Hurley. But reports of its abysmal script (which was later rewritten, to slightly more positive effect) seem to have been borne out in a pilot episode NBC could not approve. The ongoing agita over the design of the title character's costume — which producers attempted to quell by announcing Wonder Woman would actually alternate three different looks — probably didn't help either.

At least they won't make the same mistake they did with The Bionic Woman. Stop wrecking my childhood.

What I heard about the Wonder Woman story setup sounded just putrid. When even the TV execs recognize this, you know it is bad.

Reading the story, I wish the '17th Precinct' had made it though. It could have been slightly interesting, in an off kilter way.

Seemingly, this is yet another DC Comics inspired failure. Marvel Comics has been kicking their tails for years.

It is beyond pathetic that a company, so rich in diverse fictional characters, cannot be more successful beyond its Batman staple. Heck, they haven't had much to pat themselves on the back beyond Batman with the exception of the first two Superman movies--and that was 30 years ago!

You know when a comics company cannot fulfill its big or small screen ambitions while armed with the world's most recognizable fictional superhero. Now they cannot even get the third of its Big Three BACK on television--after almost forty years. Pitiful.

Green Lantern, I'm praying for ya. :crossed:

well then, maybe another network might pick it up. who knows. i would make some changes to the story, however, so that it appeals to those who are fans of wonder woman.

I knew it was going to be a bomb first the woman they cast did not cut it sorry but with the way the Comics drew here and Linda carter filled out that drawing in that outfit (oh yea Linda was hot). The new girl did not look like Wonder Woman.

So you add bad writing with an actress that does not look the part and was not even going to wear the shorts :bang2::bang2:

That's why you don't have David E. Kelley make shows for you. Especially if said show features a female lead.

Kelley has come up with some great shows; and Ally McBeal was very good for a while and that had a female lead. Picket Fences was one of the best shows of all time.

Watchmen was good, but it could have easily been great if more detail had been injected into the screenplay. However, I'm not referring to anything akin to a one-time, graphic novel masterpiece.

I'm talking main fictional entities which have been comic book company title staples for decades. In DC Comics case, I'm speaking of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman--who are its top three characters (a.k.a. heavy hitters)--in addition to The Flash, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman, The Atom, Captain Marvel, etc., etc.

The mythos established by DC Comics precedes that of Marvel Comics. Yet, it is Marvel which has made the more impressive book-to-movie/television transition.

If not for Saturday morning cartoon/direct-to-video offerings by DC over the past decade or so, the gap between the two companies would be even wider. And that's saying something considering some of the infantile material DC has endorsed.

For example, compare the Teen Titans series (DC), which Cartoon Network aired, with Wolverine & The X-Men (Marvel), which Nickeleon debuted. The former is comedy based and would insult even any child who has read the title (especially the issues printed during the 80's). The latter is dramatic with damn good art thrown in.

All-in-all, it's something which I've never understood about DC. Their movies and/or television series should be on-par with that of Marvel, if not surpassing Marvel's. They aren't and it's not even funny how wide the gap is between the two.

L.A. Law (1986–1994)
Picket Fences (1992–1996)
Chicago Hope (1994–2000)
The Practice (1997–2004)
Ally McBeal (1997–2002)
Boston Public (2000–2004)
Boston Legal (2004–2008)

There are 7 shows that were on for several years and won many Emmy awards.

i agree......15 years ago when i started seeing these remakes surface i was thrilled.....but after watching the industry butcher numerous great shows now when i hear of a remake in the works I just cringe.......
