The spring sports season is coming to a close and several NCAA championship fields are being set. The Big 12 has a number of contenders in every sport capable of winning the championship.
In men's tennis Baylor is the last Big 12 team alive, advancing to the round of 16. Baylor also advanced to the round of 16 in women's tennis, along with 11th ranked Texas.
It gets a little more exciting with golf as the men are set to tee off tomorrow in regional matches. Texas finished the regular season as the #1 team thanks largely to top ranked freshman Jordan Spieth, who is a Ben Hogan Award finalist. He had a chance to lead the Horns to a Big 12 championship but ended up in the water on the 18th in the final day to blow what was going to be an epic 9 shot comeback. All of the Texas and Oklahoma schools will be playing in the regional round as well as Iowa State. On the women's side Baylor, A&M, Texas, and Oklahoma have made the championship field.
The softball championship field has been set with Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, and A&M earning top seeds and the right to host the regional round. Baylor and Tech also qualified but will have to travel the entire tournament. It doesn't matter, Pac-12 always wins.
Finally, track and field is set to start prelims next week. The Big 12 championships were exciting as both men's and women's came down to the last few events before a champion was named (A&M for the men and Texas for the women). A&M is still the only men's team with a chance to contend for a national championship thanks to their strong sprint program. Kansas has a strong women's program but they will have a hard time beating LSU's sprinters. The championship meet will be exciting as both men's and women's will likely come down to the 4x400 relay once again.
