Just fantastic.

No Bowl game next season.

Additional loss of 4 scholarships on top of the 5 that Ohio St had sanctioned themselves over the next 3 years.

An additional year of probation on top of the 2 Ohio St had done themselves.

Tressel was also given a 5 year Show Cause Penalty.

NCAA: Ohio State banned from postseason play next season

The NCAA today stunned Ohio State University’s football program by banning it from postseason play after the 2012 season, multiple sources told The Dispatch.

The penalty means Ohio State automatically is out of the running for any bowl, or a Big Ten or national championship next year, just as newly appointed head coach Urban Meyer is wooing recruits to the Buckeyes.

Athletic Director Gene Smith said previously that while Ohio State has been declared a repeat violator that failed to properly monitor its football program, a bowl ban would be out of line with penalties handed to universities with similar violations.

It sucks to not go to a Bowl game next year but you're right.

The only recruiting it would hurt (as far as being used against them) would be the 2012 class and Meyer has put a very good one together in a short time and he could Red shirt them all if he/they wanted and they would never miss a Bowl.

Losing basically 3 scholarships a year for the next three years isn't great but as you said...it could have been worse.

Thank God it's over now and we can move on.

I've heard a couple of media guys who predominately cover college football say that had Ohio St. banned themselves from a bowl game this season, the NCAA likely would not have put the bowl ban in for next year. It would have hurt less, too. Now Meyer won't be able to get those extra 15 practices next year. Those extra practices really help team learn new systems and Meyer has a history of having really good 2nd seasons.

I don't know if that's true or not but losing out on the Gator Bowl would have been no big deal.

Should have made it 15 and a 2 year ban. With all the crap that went on plus the coverup by Tressel this is a slap on the wrist.

Terrible mis-calculation by OSU AD Gene Smith. No team with the failure to monitor has ever recd a bowl ban before. Only good thing is hopefully Smith will go now, and Urban can use this as a short leash to get rid of any player that gets in any sort of trouble. Needs to clear the way for his 5 star studs and 9 scholarships we are losing.

Tress was fired and got a 5 year show-cause. Had he stayed OSU would've been destroyed. OSU turned Tress in, threw him under the bus, and backed up several times. OSU is the first team to ever get a bowl ban with the failure to monitor charge.

I used to get in more trouble for not cleaning my room. Too much TV money for the NCAA to really do anything to major football programs.

I might be in the minority in thinking that it's a little over the top.

Personally I think they got off easy.

It's a one year bowl ban, Concord, it's not the end of the world. We aren't losing any of the big time recruits Meyer has gotten in the past week. The bowl ban is disappointing but what is far greater to me is seeing Meyer build this team/program back up again. It looks like it will not take very long. This team can have a really good year next year even without going to a bowl game.

Man has he done a great job in such a short time.

I'm very excited about the future.
