Netflix Blog entry about ISP streaming speeds

Obviously lumping Verizon DSL in with FIOS...

Your thinking last mile. (ie the DSL / FiOS connection to your house) They are talking about straight streaming speeds. (the speed it passes through their network). DSL is capable of fast speeds if you are close enough to the DSLAM AND pay for a faster speeds.

I have a 100Mb fiber connection here at the office. I don't always get 100MB speeds to every place on the Internet I go, because not everyone will allow or can handle that speed.

You don't understand. FIOS is MAGIC. It transforms ALL connections it touches into PURE GIGABIT BLISS! FIOS is bigger than traffic shaping or bandwidth throttling. How do you throttle a rainbow shooting out of a unicorn's arse? Answer: you don't! Nor do you mess with the AWESOMENESS that is FIOS.

Sadly, you will get generally better internet service in Slovakia or Slovenia than you get in the US.

That's pretty much throughout Europe. They started investing billions into the networks over there years ago and it really shows as far as bandwidth prices and packages for EU customers.

They are kicking our butts in the Telco arenas.

At my previous employment, we had 5 load balanced Internet connections. Two of them were FiOS from separate junctions. :)

Look at the population density of those small countries. If they had to cover an area the size of the US with as much rural space they would not be so far ahead. It's impossible to outfit the entire country with high speed networks, then go back and upgrade it again two years later when the latest and greatest comes out, then again two years later...
