A while back, a few posters saying that they used Neti pots... if so, this is a must read:

Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water

By The Associated Press
Fri, Dec 16, 2011

Louisiana health regulators warned residents Tuesday about the dangers of using neti pots improperly. A neti pot, which looks like a genie's lamp, is commonly used to irrigate sinuses. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals issued its warning following a second death this year caused by Naegleria fowleri, the so-called brain-eating amoeba.
A 51-year-old DeSoto Parish woman died after using tap water in a neti pot to irrigate her sinuses and became infected by the deadly amoeba, which entered the body through her nose. In June, a 20-year-old St. Bernard Parish man died under the same circumstances.

Thanks for posting. I use the bottle version occasionally and have only used tap water up until today.

If you use a Neti pot, you're pretty much brain dead already. ;)

Not at all. My wife has had allergy problems all of her life and had spent a fortune on pills, etc. and was frequently miserable until she learned about the neti pot and since then it has worked so well that she takes no more allergy pills and feels great almost all the time.

The problem isn't the neti pot, the problem is the water quality in the Deep South. The neti pot is a great solution (pun intended) to a serious problem and millions have found relief with their use.

I have allergies and tried the neti pot once. It only made things worse. (literally) It just doesn't work for me, so I quit using it.

I love my neti pot. We tested the water here when we moved in because we're on a well. It's as pure as bottled water, according to the tester we used, so hopefully I'll be ok.

What a gigantic pain it would be to use distilled water for the neti pot. Have to go and heat it up, etc.

That's exactly why I never used anything but tap water. However I won't play Russian Roulette with an amoeba any further. :D

Not water, saline solution.

Now, there in lies the issue with neti pots and tap water. A saline solution by definition is sodium chloride (salt), in sterile water. Which is why you are supposed to use distilled water when you make the solution, and not tap water.

A lot of tap water has high amounts of chlorine in them which can make your nostrils burn when you do this also.

Yes, it is weird but it really works well to clear the sinuses and to prevent flareups of sinusitis. Not only does my wifebout $50/mo in pills but she greatly enjoys getting outside now when she used to be miserable when she went outside. She got her life back.

Really sorry to hear that. Maybe you weren't holding at the right angle or somehow doing it right.

No. My doctor instructed me how to use it. About 3-5 minutes after I used it, I couldn't breath threw my nose at all. I tried it about four times over the next two weeks and got the same results.

I just quite using it and stick to Claritin D now. (the normal Claritin doesn't work at all)
