Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water

No. My doctor instructed me how to use it. About 3-5 minutes after I used it, I couldn't breath threw my nose at all. I tried it about four times over the next two weeks and got the same results.

I just quite using it and stick to Claritin D now. (the normal Claritin doesn't work at all)

Agreed. You have to go with what works for you.

A lot of tap water has high amounts of chlorine in them which can make your nostrils burn when you do this also.

This also happens to some people if you are using an entire pack of the salt.

I've been using a neti pot for awhile now and I still can't use a whole one. I use about half of one of them and that's plenty for me.

Not water, saline solution.

Now, there in lies the issue with neti pots and tap water. A saline solution by definition is sodium chloride (salt), in sterile water. Which is why you are supposed to use distilled water when you make the solution, and not tap water.

A lot of tap water has high amounts of chlorine in them which can make your nostrils burn when you do this also.

I can't imagine blowing salt water through your nose burns any less (does it?). Thank God I don't have these problems, I'd have no patience for any of that.

You don't blow it through. You just lean your head down and to the side, then tip the pot so the water runs in one nostril. There's a brief uncomfortable feeling if you haven't done it before, but then the water starts running out your other nostril.

You stop after counting to 10 and give your nose a quick blow, then, turn and do the same with the other nostril.

After you're done you have to blow your nose really well to make sure all the water is out.

Done in 5-10 minutes, max.

I've had my nose clogged for years it seems like and just recently my nostrils have been clear.

I take a lot of supplements so something im taking is opening it up.

If you have Naegleria fowleri in your tap water there might be bigger things to worry about than using it in a neti-pot. Death from this thing is rare (something like 30 cases in the last decade I think) but if it is present in your tap water it can enter the nose when dunking your head underwater. A couple of kids in Arizona died from it after bathing in it. Thankfully the water here in Washington is too cold for this thing to thrive.

You can't?

Why on earth not?

Because I've been hit by some pretty big waves and snorting the ocean hurt like hell. :laugh2:

It was uncomfortable the first time I did it, but after that it wasn't bad at all.

Faerluna: I used the full package of the saline mix and except for the first attempt, it really didn't burn. Really even the first one didn't burn that bad. It just had an initial uncomfortable feeling. Though I guess that is to be expected.

The salt content of the ocean is quite high in comparison. :D

That is like a Meganeti pot. :laugh2:

But my sinuses were very clear afterward. ;)

For my allergies I usually have to flip back and forth between Claritin D and Zyrtec every year. I'll develop a resistance to one over time and switch to keep it going.

Perhaps I just have delicate nasal passages.
