Nevada begins regulating self-driving cars

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Nevada is becoming the first state to regulate self-driving vehicles on its roadways.

The state's legislative commission on Wednesday approved regulations that were vetted by car manufacturers, insurance companies, law enforcement officials and others.


Gov. Brian Sandoval test-drove a self-driving Toyota Prius in July. The car being developed by Google Inc. uses radar, sensors and computers that allow the vehicle to drive itself, though human drivers can override the autopilot function.

I have , along with many other thoughts . None of them good .

For now at least, self driving cars would mean to much lost income in fines for the state.

I would imagine that there are limitations on the vehicle. Doubtful it would just drive to the pacific if the driver fell asleep.

I could see a system in place where you have to respond to the car every so often and if not, it throws the hazards on and slows down to a stop on the side of the road.

I don't imagine the car would drive itself without a programmed destination beforehand. It would be great to have it park itself after dropping you off at the door and being able to call it to pick you up again.

Stuff like this is a lot closer to reality than most people could probably even imagine. From reading a few articles and even a couple of episodes of motorweek, basically if manufacturers and legislators wanted it to happen, many models would probably be available in the next model year or two. The collision prevention systems, cruise control and parking systems on many cars can basically already drive a car in the physical sense. Direction, traffic information and speed limit are already broadcast via GPS and can be used to limit car speeds. GPS can guide cars directionally, but needs to be honed to the purpose of cars being driven for things like parking. Collision systems would keep cars from colliding into cars and other walls. This was even demonstrated on Motorweek with a test car that was fully equipped. I think even more interesting was that this would save gas, pretty much eliminate traffic, and drastically reduce accidents through more efficient driving.

As an avid motorcycle enthusiast this scares the hell out of me.
