New drugs, fresh hope for autism patients

Afterward, Jack's teacher greeted the Balters in tears. "I don't know what is going on with this kid, but there is this miracle happening and I have a different kid at school," she told the Balters.
Jack, 9 years old, has autism. What his teacher didn't know is that Jack was taking part in a clinical trial for a drug aimed at overcoming some of the social impairment associated with autism, a spectrum of disorders that range from the social awkwardness and narrow interests seen in Asperger syndrome to severe communication and intellectual disabilities.

As the parent of an autistic child I welcome this news with a glad heart. Any kind of breakthrough gets me excited. Thanks for posting.

As a person that suffers from asbergers, that is awesome news. Good luck with that!:)

If this actually works, that is unbelievable. So awesome. I havent studied the subject i admit, but i have seen the positive effects the right therapy and specialized teaching can have for kids with some autism and just assumed that was the only thing that could be done. For some reason i just never considered drugs

Well, we've know for a long time that autism is caused by a chemical imbalance or deficiency and it has always been a trick to find what drugs can correct that imbalance. There have been some drugs that have been used with some success but this is something that is much further along in terms of an outright correction rather than a suppression of symptoms, at least that is how I am viewing this.

My experience is with a much younger cousin and ill admit i just really never asked many questions. Have these ones been prescribed often? Maybe he took or is still taking something too but i just didnt know...

This is awesome news. At the risk of sounding silly I've always thought I have some exact characteristics of someone with aspergers. Maybe not severe but some. I've always felt like I had a certain understanding of what someone with autism or aspergers is feeling or going through as well.

I hope this medicine works for everyone and can help a lot of people who have it out.

I knew there where several parents including me on this board that deal with this on a daily basis.

I just hope they continue to have great success and something comes along soon.
