Just got back from a trip to Columbus, Georgia. Amongst other things, I visited a retired officer who had served with my father a number of times. Talking to him, he strongly suggested that I go to the new National Infantry Museum down at the Fort. NO armtwisting was required, so we headed down to visit it the next day. It's been open for less than a year.

Anyone who was infantry, or is interested in military history, who is anywhere near there should definitely go for a visit. They have done an incredible job with this! It is damned impressive, and very moving. The displays are top quality, done with a combination of a historian's eye and a soldier's spirit. It was the brainchild of a former post comander, who managed to keep and use parts of the Atlanta Olympics village for the infrastructure. The Museum has a WWII street in back of it, salvaged from structures that were to be torn down on the post, but instead were saved and restored to give the exact look it had during the war.

This is a very worthwhile visit for anyone in the area. I went there on two different days and couldn't manage to see everything. But one of the coolest things I saw, aside from the exhibits, was the mixture of newly graduating soldiers, Gulf veterans, Vietnam vets, and Korean War vets all hanging together and talking.

It is worth your consideration.

Wish I would have known you were in town - I would've loved to share a beer (or a soda) with a fellow Cowboys fan.

And yes, that museum is very impressive. I've been a few times. Definitely impressive.

Dang, just wasn't thinking....I should have shouted out for Zoner fans in the area, of course. I blame the off season doldrums! ;)

My experiance at the museum was pretty stellar. I am already trying to figure out an excuse to get back into the area sometime soon. Will definitely give a holler next time.

I hope to go TDY there sometime while I'm working with the Army. I always try to go to the military museums while on TDY. Hood and Bragg have nice ones, too. Rock Island has a really nice gun collection at its museum.

Thanks for the info on Rock Island. Will have to add that to the list of 'to visit' spots.

Haven't been to Hood in a long time, must check that out next time I am up there. Have heard that Rucker has upgraded the helicopter museum, but I recall it being just a wild bunch of prototype choppers moldering on a concrete pad.

Definitely. You know who to look for...if it's within the next 30 days :)

If you like small arms, artillery, and tanks, you MUST go to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. The US Army Ordnance Museum has the largest collection of small arms of any museum in the military. If you call ahead of time and speak to the museum's director, he might give you a hands-on tour of the small arms vault in the back. I got a chance to fiddle with the experimental XM-8 (still upset the Army cancelled it), the French FAMAS, Steyr Aug, Uzis, and countless other small arms from recent stuff all the way to Charleville muskets.

Oh, did I mention they have Anzio Annie, aka Leopold?
