The Associated Press reports a House committee approved a bill Wednesday, June 29, that would set minimum steroid-testing rules and penalties for professional sports. The Drug Free Sports Act would set drug-testing policy for the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball. Under the act, the athlete would be suspended half the season for the first offense, a full season for the second, and a lifetime ban for a third offense. The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the steroids legislation, 38-2. An NBA spokesman said the league would not comment. Officials with the NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball had no immediate comment Wednesday.
