Week 1 looked to be from a different era. More than half of starting QB’s failed to reach 200 yards which was least prolific week for throwing the football since 2007.

In all, teams averaged 188.3 yards passing in a game since week 15 in 2007 when the number was 187.1 and down 28.6% from the week 1 record average of 263.8 average set 5 years ago.

There were 17 starting QB’s who threw for less than 200 yards for only the second time since 2011. There were 18 in the final week of 2023 when several regular starters rested before the postseason.

Week 1 can have some abnormal games due to rust, new playcallers, teammates etc... But that low of a number is interesting.

Going back 17 years is quite a feat. Especially with more teams running a variant of a 11 packages and rules favoring the passing game.

I pretty much ignore week 1 results but this is interesting

looking at the stats for the last four years passing yards has gone down but points pretty much remain the same

To paraphrase Kyler Murray, it is not a QB's job to throw for over 200 yards.

Same number of wins and losses. Just an anomaly.

I have always disagreed with ranking offenses and defenses by yardage. It is the most useless measurement in the end.
points per game is what matters.
And if you want to get deeper, stats like 3rd down conversion rate for both offense and defense is a telling one

We have seen QBs throw for 500 yds and lose and some throw for barely over 100 yds and win

Now as regards ranking QBs YPA and 3rd down conversion rate is important; and to a lesser degree TD rate vs INT rate as well

The problem with using scoring for measurement is the special teams and defense can also score which could skew those totals. I’d be happy to discuss why they use total yardage.

But regardless whether we agree or not think there’s a reason the league has maintained using yardage as the ultimate measurement.

It doesn’t mean we can’t use points , 3rd down conversions or turnover differential as key contributing factors.

One point of view I found pertinent is now with new format of 17 regular season and 3 preseason games we arent seeing most teams use their starters in preseason which makes the first week more of a rusty appearance.

does not mean the NFL has a good reason to keep measuring offenses and defenses by yardage
I mean they are so trustworthy and so up front and so honest and so smart....

as regards who scores the points, that is pretty easy to sort out. OFF scores DEF scores and ST scores

I'm not crazy about yardage either, but points aren't easy to sort out either. What happens when special teams or defense doesn't score, but puts a team in a position to easily score?

Of course the NFL has a good reason why they established and maintain total yardage as the measurement.
