While NFL free agency is still ongoing and teams and fans alike are starting to put more focus on the upcoming draft, there are some other things happening that will affect the entire league, including of course the Dallas Cowboys. Something happened a bit under the radar earlier this week that will have an impact on how all teams conduct their business at the end of training camp. After years of having a three-stage cutdown process, there will now just be one big cut from 90 players to the 53-man roster.

I love this plan! It adds far more excitement to the preseason and gets teams to full strength much quicker.

It could create more trades. Teams may anticipate certain players being released. Ones they May have wanted to draft or sign as an UDFA, but did not work out at the time.

So instead of waiting and taking a chance on the waiver wire. Like in the past. They will make trades.

Now it will be for bottom of the roster type players. Or an older vet player. But it still can be interesting.

doesn't seem like a big deal, more time to keep and evaluate players before they are kept or cut,

what i want is the draft to be put the first week of April the entire overthinking and processing these players is overkill. waiting for the draft is frustrating lets go get it done NOW!

Makes PS games all the more meaningless other than the coaches to evaluate PS players.
I think it does the opposite. They now have more time to evaluate the players and those players can actually see the full preseason.

I always thought it was dumb that they did cut downs throughout preseason. It's like isn't the whole purpose of preseason to rotate players in ? Can't really do that when your cutting down players every single game

I agree with this. It gives us more time to evaluate players...

I agree with that but since the draft is now a complete spectacle, they want to spread out the down time.

That may be the thinking behind it

I wish they would expand the rosters. The active roster should be everyone on the team instead of deactivating players for games. And the team roster should be expanded to 57 players. What difference does it make if all 53 or 57 players on the roster are active or not? If guys get injured teams should be able to replace them.

I also think they should implement some kind of veteran CAP exception. Players who played their entire careers on 1 team should not have to leave for salary CAP reasons. Likewise, with QB salaries increasing much faster than the salary CAP maybe they should implement an allowance for a certain portion of a QBs salary to be off CAP to lower their CAP cost. QB salaries are going to change how teams are built and I don't think in the long run it will improve the product we watch every week.

A crazy and chaotic cutdown day to say the least.

37 players X 32 teams = 1184 players cut?!?!?

Good it takes the workload off of staff of the teams

one big cut instead of little by little and getting in the way of planning for the next game

Each team will have an IT guy or gal that will have set up a program to effortlessly\straightforwardly inform players via email of their status once that third preseason game ends per the FO-coaching staffs' decisions. They might even set up a speed dial notification process to support the process.
