National organization bans the 'Fumblerooski'

A fun and entertaining football play — the fumblerooski — has been banned as preparations for the 2006 high school season have begun, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

The decision, made by the National Federation of State High School Associations football rules committee, will effectively deny offensive linemen across the nation their best opportunity to score a touchdown while making a desperate, sometimes funny sprint toward the end zone.As The Times points out, the fumblerooski was banned in the NFL in the 1960s, and college football officially started to forbid the play in 1993.

The play involves placing the ball on the ground behind the center after it has been snapped. While all of the offensive players move to block in one direction, one lineman (typically a guard) picks it up and begins his rumble — often unnoticed — until it is too late.

The Times says one Thousand Oaks, Calif. lineman ran for two touchdowns in a 2003 game.

But Jerry Diehl, the assistant director of the National Federation of State High School Associations, said the play was seldom used. It also put a burden on officials because teams had to inform the referee before running the play.

"It (the ban) eliminates confusion in a ballgame," Diehl reportedly said.
The rules for the 2006 season, which were approved in January, don't mention the fumblerooski by name. But Rule 7-2-8 states, "The option to use a 'planned loose ball' has been eliminated."

Stupid rule...

I can understand why not in the NFL, but in High School???

High School is all about gadgets. That's a gadget, so they should be allowed to use it.

It won't matter, Southlake Carroll will still dominate!!

I live in Thousand Oaks - never heard of this before. Rugby? :laugh2:

Ridculous, that play in the 1984 Orange Bowl was one of the greatest plays ever. Pitiful.....

So is the NFL, the Steelers won the Superbowl by using referees....er I mean gadget plays.

Speaking of gadget plays, remind me of the name of that TE we used with the "pretend to block and fall down, then make a break for the TD pass" play? I know I could just look it up on google, but I hate when I can't remember names.

What the hell does that mean?? I don't think the offense is confused. Isn't the point of trick plays to confuse the defense. Why don't they eliminate the flea flicker or the hook and ladder?

I love that play.....we need to use it again. We just need a QB that can complete it to a WIDE OPEN TE, lol....Hutch totally screwed that play up twice with short throws....McGee was the man when it came to that play.

Classic, and we need to use it when we're in a jam.

OMG NOOOOOOOooooooo!!! I actually scored a few TDs in highschool as a TE and Guard (depending on the year and my knee injury). I loved this play...they can't do this!

I think they meant it eliminates confusion among "officials" on the field.

We used the play in HS....Never had to tell the officials about it...My job was to dive on an empty patch of earth yelling fumble while players for both sides dived on top of me looking for the ball.

I was the grunt of the play, not the star.
