Now that it's come to light that Sam Williams is *that* freaky of an athlete

... or, I should say, come to light for me, don't know about anyone else... 4.5-ish speed @ 260-ish lbs... capable of being a legit gunner on special teams...

Do you do with Sam what you won't do with Micah because Micah simply is too valuable (so don't want to expose to injury risk), ie, give him a tryout and see if you trust him as a short-yardage/goalline specialist on offense?

He's slightly bigger than Derrick Henry... I can't help but wonder if that would pay dividends.

Biggest worry in doing that is fumbles.
Right... hence the way I phrased that... tryout to see if there's any reason for optimism... and then, if so, see if he can earn trust over a few weeks of practices... and if so, roll it out in a cold December game where a punishing bruiser on a play or two would be a weapon, and go from there.

Williams has always been a freak athlete. It's from the neck up where the issues start.

Sam's big for his speed, but there's a lot more to playing running back than that. I have no idea if he'd have the patience to find the crease, the leg drive to push the pile, the technique to make sure he hangs on to the ball, etc. I mean, I'm all for maximizing our talent, but there's probably a good reason we're not lining him up at RB.

maybe at fullback
I think gunner is good for him because it requires very little thinking. Not saying he's stupid, but diagnosing isn't everyone's strong suit. I think Sam is better at see ball, go get ball.

I don't dispute any of your reasons for doubt, hence the suggestion of beginning to assess in practice whether that's realistic.

But I do question the presumption it's already been given the level of consideration that you're suggesting. Maybe. But I kinda doubt it. Given how Bones talked about it, they hadn't even seriously considered putting SW into the game as a gunner until they just did.

You could be correct about that. Usually, it's need that makes such a move a consideration. We didn't need Williams at gunner until we lost Goodwin. Can't see them giving any real consideration to Williams at running back unless we lost several players. And even then considering the unknown, we'd probably go out and sign a street FA to play the position before we'd think about Sam in that role.
