Yup, this isn't a big surprise.

1. Helps the team out. While it doesn't reduce the cap now, it will in the future. Dirk has already said he would take less money to allow Cuban to get a legit FA this off season.

2. Helps Dirk out. Signing an extension would only be a 3 year deal - This allows him to sign for longer and still under the CBA right now.

Dirk is a true team first guy. You can say anything you want about Dirk and the fact he hasn't won a ring yet, but he's the easiest player to cheer for in the NBA in a LONG time.
